The ideal candidate is an experienced underground mining professional with a strong background in shaft inspection, maintenance and hoisting operations. They are safety-focused, detail-oriented and comfortable identifying potential hazards or deficiencies within shaft infrastructure. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong communication and leadership skills, sound judgment, and the ability to safely coordinate shaft crews while ensuring inspections and required repairs are completed to established standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform work in accordance with site safety standards, procedures and applicable mining regulations.
- Review shaft logbooks, previous inspection findings and repair activities to identify outstanding or unusual conditions.
- Conduct detailed inspections of shaft walls,
guides and associated shaft components using visual, tapping and sounding inspection methods.
- Identify defects, deterioration or unsafe conditions and determine required repair or replacement work.
- Direct and coordinate shaft crew activities during inspections, maintenance and repair work.
- Ensure required tools, materials and supplies are available for planned shaft work.
- Communicate planned shaft activities with hoist personnel and other affected departments.
- Direct and assist with the installation and securing of inspection hoods, shaft guides, work platforms and related equipment on shaft conveyances.
- Control shaft conveyance movement using established bell and light signalling systems.
- Maintain effective communication with all members of the shaft inspection crew throughout inspection and maintenance activities.
- Document inspection findings, completed repairs and outstanding maintenance requirements in applicable shaft records and logbooks.
- Support corrective maintenance activities resulting from shaft inspections.
- Participate in required safety, environmental and job-specific training.
Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of underground mining experience, with significant experience working in or around mine shafts & hoisting systems.
- Previous experience in shaft inspection,
shaft maintenance, shaft sinking or related underground maintenance is strongly preferred.
- Ontario Underground Hard Rock Miner Common Core
- Strong knowledge of mine shaft infrastructure, including guides, conveyances, shaft steel, platforms and associated components.
- Demonstrated knowledge of shaft inspection practices and identification of defects & unsafe conditions.
- Experience with mine hoisting operations and established shaft signalling/communication systems.
- Ability to read and accurately maintain shaft logbooks and inspection documentation.
- Strong understanding of underground mining safety procedures and Ontario mining regulations.
- Proven ability to direct and coordinate crew activities safely and effectively.
- Strong communication, observation and problem-solving skills.
- Physically capable of performing shaft inspection duties in an underground mining environment.
