Following the appointment of Dr. Brenda Merritt as Acting Provost and Vice-President Academic, and consistent with Dalhousie’s established process for acting leadership appointments, expressions of interest are invited for the role of Acting Dean, Faculty of Health, with applications due by noon September 2, 2026.

This acting appointment will begin September 2026 and continue for up to one year while Dr. Merritt serves as Acting Provost and Vice-President Academic. The Acting Dean will provide leadership and continuity during this period while supporting the Faculty in advancing its strategic priorities, maintaining strong partnerships, and building on the significant momentum achieved under Dr. Merritt’s leadership.

Reporting to the Acting Provost and Vice-President Academic, the Acting Dean serves as the senior academic leader and chief administrator of the Faculty and as a member of Dalhousie University’s senior academic and administrative leadership team.

The Acting

Dean provides strategic leadership in advancing excellence in teaching, research, scholarship, and service, while overseeing the Faculty’s academic priorities, financial resources, and operational activities. The role also includes fostering collaboration across the Faculty and strengthening relationships with health system, government, and community partners.

Dalhousie’s Faculty of Health is one of the largest and most complex Faculties at the university and one of the most programmatically diverse health faculties in Canada. Comprised of eight Schools, the College of Pharmacy,



the Clinical Vision Science Program, the Healthy Populations Institute, and the Centre for Collaborative Clinical Learning and Research, the Faculty is a nationally and internationally recognized leader in health research and scholarship. With more than 1,000 employees, over 3,000 students, 45 academic programs, diplomas and certificates, and more than 27,000 alumni worldwide, the Faculty advances transformational health through interprofessional education, research, and partnerships across the health system and broader community.

The ideal candidate will be a respected academic leader who holds an advanced degree in a relevant field of study and brings significant leadership experience in a complex university environment. They will demonstrate a commitment to collaboration, inclusion, and excellence in teaching, research, and service, along with strong relationship-building and communication skills, sound judgment, and the ability to provide strategic leadership during a period of transition. Drawing on an understanding of health professions education, research, and the evolving health and social systems landscape, the successful candidate will be able to foster collaboration, steward resources effectively, and advance the Faculty’s priorities through meaningful internal and external partnerships.
