Equinox VGM is currently inviting applications for a Senior Chemist to join our growing team as the company ramps up mine operations and production.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Chief Metallurgist, the Senior Chemist will be responsible for supervising the Analytical Laboratory personnel, ensuring safe work practices, and that the lab maintains efficient throughput while maintaining the required QA/QC and safety standards. The incumbent is required to ensure the accurate, timely and cost-efficient analysis of samples submitted by Mine, Process Plant and Environmental group in support of Operations and Environmental regulatory compliance.
This position requires extensive experience in a mine operations lab where the process is open pit or underground mining and a plant process that includes gravity recovery of gold as well as leach and carbon in leach processing.
This position is located at the Mine site, working a 14 days in/14 days out rotation.
Accountabilities/Responsibilities
- Support and assist in promoting a health and safety culture.
- Ensure that effective Health, Safety and Environmental procedures,
government regulations and Equinox – Valentine Gold Mine standard operating procedures (SOPs) are implemented and followed.
- Perform Safety inspections of the relevant areas in conjunction with Health & Safety, Environment, and contractors.
- Oversee, lead and coordinate all laboratory functions to ensure timely and accurate test results including carrying out analytical tests on ore processed in the mill to determine gold content.
- Participate within the onsite Environment Laboratory for the purpose of internal water analysis to support the samples from the process plant, as well as an onsite water treatment plant.
- Participate in the testing of mine samples including sample preparation, wet assays, environment assays, fire assay and other related analyses.
- Supervise the activities of assigned personnel in the plant’s assay laboratory.
- Lead the development of SOPS for each procedure utilized in the assay laboratory.
- Lead and assist in the Development of Good Laboratory Practices and training manuals.
- Provide process improvement recommendations that will enhance the overall business.
- Coordinate with mill maintenance to ensure proper maintenance and efficiency of lab and analytical equipment.
- Provide accurate information and reports to ensure the completion of the departmental budget.
- Prepare various weekly and monthly reports.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Education And Experience Required
- Undergraduate Degree in Chemistry or a Chemical and Metallurgical Technology diploma.
- A minimum of 8 years mining lab experience, 3 of which are at a leadership level, preferably in a remote gold mine site or industrial environment.
- Experience in an operating mine using the cyanidation plant process is required.
- Experience in a remote work site is required.

- Knowledge of health, safety, and environmental requirements at remote sites.

- Effective time management skills and able to manage multiple priorities.
- Ability to influence and inspire others and manage cross-functional relationships.
- A valid driver license and a driver’s abstract.
