About APEL Extrusions
APEL Extrusions is an independent extruder, finisher, and fabricator of aluminum extrusions serving the commercial, residential, and industrial markets throughout Western Canada and the Western United States. With headquarters in Calgary, Alberta, and facilities in Coburg, Oregon and Phoenix, Arizona, APEL is a fully integrated aluminum extruder with six extrusion presses and a full range of finishing capabilities, employing approximately 300 people across North America.
At APEL, safety is more than a program, it's a core value. We are seeking an experienced Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Manager to lead our health, safety, environmental, and compliance programs while fostering a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence.
The Opportunity
Reporting to the Plant Manager, the Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and continuously improving APEL's health, safety, environmental, and regulatory compliance programs. This role partners closely with leaders across the organization to reduce workplace risk, ensure legislative compliance, strengthen employee engagement, and support sustainable manufacturing practices.
The successful candidate will be a visible leader on the production floor who builds strong relationships, coaches leaders, drives accountability, and champions continuous improvement in workplace health, safety, and environmental performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and continuously improve APEL's Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) programs while promoting a proactive safety culture across the organization.
- Ensure compliance with Alberta Occupational Health & Safety legislation, environmental regulations, and company policies through audits, inspections, and regulatory reporting.
- Chair the Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC), lead incident investigations, root cause analyses, corrective actions, and oversee WCB claims and return-to-work programs.
- Develop, implement, and maintain health, safety, environmental, emergency response, and compliance programs, policies, and procedures.
- Oversee environmental initiatives including waste stream mapping, waste management, waste treatment documentation, SDS administration, and sustainability projects.
- Develop and deliver health, safety, and environmental training while coaching leaders to strengthen safety performance and accountability.
- Monitor EHS performance metrics, prepare monthly reporting, and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
- Build strong partnerships with employees, leaders, contractors, and regulatory agencies to maintain a safe, healthy, and environmentally responsible workplace.
Qualifications
- Minimum 5-10 years of progressive Environmental, Health & Safety leadership experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
- Post-secondary education in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Canadian Registered Safety Skilled (CRSP) designation is considered an asset.
- Thorough knowledge of Alberta Occupational Health & Safety legislation, Workers' Compensation requirements, and environmental regulations.
- Experience managing WCB claims, return-to-work programs, and workplace incident investigations.
- Strong understanding of risk assessment, hazard identification, industrial hygiene, and regulatory compliance.
- Excellent leadership, communication, coaching, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and EHS reporting/document management systems.

Working Environment: Exposed to a production environment which includes noise, moving machinery, forklifts and fluctuations in temperature.
