Autism Edmonton is the oldest autism organization in the province and has served the Edmonton and area community since 1971. Today, Autism Edmonton continues to be the "go-to" source and the initial point of contact and provides ongoing support in three key areas: community support, advocacy, and knowledge and education.
The Family Support Coordinator of Autism Edmonton provides support and service navigation assistance to families and their children on the autism spectrum. They will also participate in the coordination and delivery of community education sessions and provide consultation to autism service/program professionals. Support may include service navigation, peer connections, family-based activities and support following diagnosis.
Duties and Responsibilities
Development, Coordination, and Delivery of Services (50%):
- Provide timely and diligent personal and/or qualified support and service navigation assistance to autistic children and youth and their families.
- Participate in the development and coordination, enhancement, and evaluations of programs and services within the Support Services portfolio as assigned by the Programs Director.
- Assist in the coordination or delivery of other programs and services as deemed necessary.
- Collaborate with Programs Director to deliver presentations and resources provincially. Community engagement through resource tables, teddy bear fairs, etc. Travel will be an expectation in this role.
- Continually research, identify and disseminate latest information on community/government programs and services, client and community needs, treatments, and relevant legislations.
- In conjunction with the Programs Director, develop, and maintain streamlined processes for client data intake, recording and reporting.
- Monitor and report on program activities and outcomes.
- Maintain timely and accurate records of client intake, referrals, statistics, and demographic data as well as program information in accordance with established standards. Input this data into our software system.
Community Outreach, Peer Discussions, and Sensory Experiences (50%):
- Travel to and from events, bringing resource material and/or sensory equipment.
- Build and maintain relationships with relevant individuals, groups, and agencies.
- Collaborate with external partners and attend relevant action tables.
- Facilitate peer discussion groups virtually and in-person.
- Support Sensory Experiences (including contracts, scheduling, delivering, setting up, tear down, equipment cleaning, and inventory management).
Individual Responsibilities:
- As a team member, demonstrates, and ensures that they are engaging in work practices that are consistent with agency values, mission statement, and Autism Edmonton standards.
- Attends and actively participates in team meetings, as required.
- Required to work in a direct service capacity within the program, meeting with members.
- Arrives on time for shifts and is prepared to work with regards to appropriate clothing, tasks, and activities.
- Performs additional job functions for the benefit of the individuals, the program, and the organisation as mutually agreed upon with his/her supervisor.
Health and Safety
- Works in partnership with members and staff to take reasonable care to avoid harm in the workplace and in the community.
- Follows Autism Edmonton’s policy, and Workers Compensation Board reporting standards, when dealing with employee accidents.
- Ensures all health, and safety standards within the organization are adhered to. This includes universal precautions, evacuation plans, fire drills, emergency supplies, etc.
Training and Development
- Completes, and maintains all mandatory training, and clearance requirements within specified time periods.
- If applicable, maintains all professional designations. (i.e. Registered Social Worker practice permits).
- Participates in supervision and annual reviews with supervisors, as scheduled.
Financial Management
- Ensures petty cash, and other valuables are properly reconciled, and secured.
Technological Requirements:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office software. (i.e., Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams)
- Regular use of the software database system to input a variety of information.
Physical and Emotional Requirements:
- Visual concentration with regards to computer usage, and reviewing all documentation, procedures, and instructions.
- When required to work in a direct service capacity, physical exertion may be required as related to lifting, cleaning, maintenance, and recreational activities.
- Demonstrates an ability to deal with stressful situations in an appropriate manner.
Working Conditions:
- Emergency situations may result in the alteration/extension of a shift until the situation is under control. (i.e., shift cancellations, staffing shortages, individual crises.) Hours for this position will vary and include some travel, evening meetings, and occasional weekends.
- Will work directly with members in a variety of community settings.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and a reliable vehicle to travel between work sites daily; capability to transport necessary tools and work materials is required.
- Physically able to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally and perform repetitive physical tasks associated with transporting site materials.
- Potential exposure to emotionally charged, volatile behavioural situations.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Diploma or undergraduate degree in a related field; equivalencies will be considered.
- Related experience in Human Services.
Screening Requirements
- Security Clearance with completed Vulnerable Sector check.
- Valid driver's license and adequate automobile insurance (if applicable).
- Children’s Services Information Check is required for this position.
