The Opportunity

This position is responsible for conducting detailed forensic interviews of children and youth involved in child abuse investigations or who may be witness to violence. The incumbent conducts interviews in a manner that is developmentally and culturally sensitive, neutral, fact-finding, and legally sound. They adhere to research-based forensic interview guidelines to create an environment that enhances free recall, minimizes interviewer influence, and gathers information needed by all multi disciplinary team members to avoid duplication in the interview process.

The Forensic

Interviewer may also be responsible for facilitating structured forensic interviewer peer reviews and providing training and/or mentorship to multidisciplinary team members regarding forensic interviewing.

The Forensic Interviewer engages in tasks and activities that support and facilitate a multidisciplinary team approach to child abuse investigations. They are a member of a collaborative team of professionals that works to reduce trauma and promote healing for child/youth victims and non-offending family members.

The Qualifications

This position requires a post-secondary degree in a discipline such as social work, psychology, criminal justice, or a related field from an accredited academic institution, a minimum of 2 years of experience conducting forensic interviews of child and youth victims and witnesses and 3 to 5 years of experience conducting child abuse investigations within a law enforcement and/or child protection setting/role. Related experience or commensurate education of a comparable or equivalent level will also be considered.

- Knowledge of child protection and law enforcement child abuse investigative procedures.
- Knowledge of child development, memory and trauma, and the effects of abuse on children, youth and family members.
- Ability to engage children of all ages in an interview setting and communicate with caregivers in crisis.




- Understanding of children living with disabilities and ability to interview children with unique needs.
- Understanding of the dynamics of abuse and psycho-social needs of child victims of abuse.
- Knowledge of and experience with criminal justice and judicial systems, preferably in Manitoba.
- Experience in providing court testimony based on forensic interviews.
- Experience with and understanding of a multidisciplinary team approach to child abuse investigations.
- Sensitivity to the diverse cultural backgrounds of children in Manitoba.
- Knowledge of and sensitivity to family systems, attachment and child victimization.
- Knowledge of relevant legislation (Child and Family Services Act, Criminal Code, Personal Health Information Act, Freedom of Information and Privacy Act, The Protecting Children (Information Sharing Act))
- Ability to communicate effectively with professionals across disciplines and function as part of a team.
- Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
- Fluency in French and English would be considered an asset.
