Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Lead SCADA & Telecom Engineer to provide technical leadership for complex utility, renewable energy, and high-voltage substation projects.
This role will lead the design and integration of SCADA, communications, networking, and cybersecurity systems across substations, renewable generation facilities, and operations centers. The engineer will coordinate internal teams, vendors, customers, and field personnel throughout design, testing, and project execution.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop functional specifications and system architectures for SCADA and telecommunications systems across complex, multi-site projects.
- Lead the integration of SCADA, networking, cybersecurity, and communication systems for HV/EHV substations and renewable energy facilities.
- Review vendor and manufacturer designs to ensure technical compliance, system performance, interoperability, and constructability.
- Design and review SCADA architectures involving HMIs, gateways, RTUs, communication networks, and substation automation systems.
- Ensure designs align with applicable cybersecurity requirements, including NERC CIP and relevant industrial cybersecurity standards.
- Coordinate interfaces with protection and control, physical substation design, commissioning, construction, and site engineering teams.
- Develop and review Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) and Site Acceptance Test (SAT) procedures and participate in system testing.
- Prepare engineering estimates, equipment quantities, technical scopes, and cost inputs for proposals and project planning.
- Identify technical risks, design changes, cost impacts, and schedule concerns during project execution.
- Interface directly with customers to resolve technical issues and communicate engineering recommendations.
- Mentor less experienced engineers and contribute to improvements in design standards, procedures, and engineering practices.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Telecommunications, Information Technology, or a related engineering discipline.
- 10+ years of relevant engineering experience.
- At least 3 years of direct experience with SCADA and telecommunications systems for utility, renewable energy, industrial, or HV/EHV substation applications.
- Strong understanding of SCADA system architecture, industrial communications, and network integration.
- Experience coordinating multidisciplinary engineering teams and external equipment vendors.
- Robust technical communication, organization, and project execution skills.
Preferred Background
- Experience with NERC CIP requirements and cybersecurity frameworks such as IEC 62443.
- Knowledge of IEC 61850 digital substation architectures and protocols such as DNP3 and OPC.
- Familiarity with network redundancy technologies including PRP, HSR, and RSTP.
- Experience with cybersecurity infrastructure such as firewalls, VPNs, routers, and intrusion detection systems.
- Knowledge of telecommunications technologies including MPLS, WAN, multiplexers, LTE/4G, and related communication systems.
- Experience designing communication networks for offshore wind, energy infrastructure, or other remote industrial facilities.
- Familiarity with alarm systems, telecom monitoring, and marine or offshore communication systems.
- Understanding of U.S. utility design practices and applicable NEC, ANSI, and industry standards.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license, or ability to obtain licensure within an appropriate timeframe.
- Experience designing scalable, resilient, and highly available industrial communication networks.
