Position Summary The Lead Sprinkler Fitter & Cross Connection Specialist is a senior technical position responsible for leading Cantec Fire Alarms Ltd.’s sprinkler and cross connection control services. This position requires a Red Seal Sprinkler Fitter certification and current BCWWA Backflow Assembly Tester certification, with the experience and technical ability to inspect, test, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair a broad range of fire sprinkler systems and backflow prevention assemblies.
The successful candidate will act as Cantec’s technical lead for cross connection control and provide senior-level support for sprinkler inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair work in accordance with applicable codes, standards, manufacturer requirements, and company procedures.
This is a hands-on field position with additional responsibility for technical leadership, quality control, training, troubleshooting, and supporting the continued development of Cantec’s sprinkler and backflow divisions.
Key ResponsibilitiesCross Connection Control & Backflow Prevention
- Act as Cantec’s lead technical resource for cross connection control and backflow prevention.
- Perform testing of backflow prevention assemblies in accordance with applicable BCWWA requirements, local authority requirements, and manufacturer instructions.
- Diagnose, service, rebuild, and repair backflow prevention assemblies across a wide range of sizes and applications.
- Perform repairs including replacement of check assemblies, relief valves, shut-off valves, springs, seals, diaphragms, and other internal components.
- Troubleshoot assemblies that fail initial testing and determine the appropriate repair or replacement strategy.
- Complete required testing documentation accurately and submit results to the applicable authority having jurisdiction.
- Maintain current knowledge of local cross connection control programs and requirements throughout Cantec’s service areas.
- Provide technical support and mentorship to other Cantec technicians pursuing or maintaining BCWWA certification.
- Assist management with developing standardized procedures, tooling, inventory, and best practices for Cantec’s backflow services.
Fire Sprinkler Inspection, Testing & Maintenance
- Inspect, test, and maintain water-based fire protection systems in accordance with NFPA 25, applicable codes and standards, manufacturer requirements, and authority having jurisdiction requirements.
- Perform annual and periodic inspections and testing of wet, dry, pre-action, and other water-based fire protection systems within the technician’s qualifications and scope of work.
- Inspect and test sprinkler system components including:
- Wet and dry pipe systems
- Alarm, dry pipe, and check valves
- Waterflow alarm devices
- Supervisory devices and valve tamper switches
- Fire department connections
- Standpipe and hose systems
- Pressure reducing and pressure regulating devices
- Fire pumps and associated components
- Gauges, drains, valves, and auxiliary equipment
- Perform required periodic testing including main drain tests, waterflow tests, dry system trip tests, internal inspections, and other NFPA 25 testing procedures.
- Identify deficiencies, impairments, and conditions that may affect the reliability or operation of fire protection systems.
- Clearly document deficiencies and provide recommendations for corrective action.
- Complete sprinkler system repairs, alterations, and component replacements within the scope of the technician’s qualifications and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Troubleshoot complex sprinkler system issues and provide senior technical assistance to other field technicians.
Technical Leadership
- Serve as a senior technical resource for sprinkler and backflow-related questions within the company.
- Assist technicians with troubleshooting difficult field conditions and determining appropriate repair procedures.
- Provide practical field training and mentorship to apprentices, junior sprinkler technicians, and backflow testers.
- Promote consistent inspection and testing procedures across the sprinkler division.
- Review field practices and completed work to help ensure Cantec's quality standards are maintained.
- Assist with the development of technician training materials, inspection procedures, and field reference documents.
- Participate in ongoing technical training and remain current with changes to NFPA standards, BC codes, BCWWA requirements, and industry best practices.
Service & Repair
- Diagnose sprinkler and backflow deficiencies and complete repairs efficiently and professionally.
- Determine required materials, replacement components, labour requirements, and equipment necessary to complete repairs.
- Communicate additional work requirements to the office when deficiencies are discovered in the field.
- Assist with estimating and scoping larger or technically complex sprinkler and backflow repairs.
- Coordinate system shutdowns and impairments with building representatives, monitoring companies, and other applicable parties.
- Return systems to normal operating condition following testing, maintenance, or repairs and confirm proper operation before leaving the site.
Documentation & Customer Service
- Complete inspection reports, test records, deficiency documentation, service reports, and backflow test reports accurately and professionally.
- Clearly communicate technical findings to property managers, building operators, contractors, and customers.
- Explain deficiencies and repair requirements in practical terms without unnecessarily alarming or pressuring customers.
- Maintain professional relationships with customers, authorities having jurisdiction, inspectors, and other trades.
- Ensure documentation provides a explicit record of the work completed, equipment tested, deficiencies identified, and corrective actions performed.
Required Qualifications
- Red Seal Sprinkler Fitter certification.
- Current BCWWA Backflow Assembly Tester certification.
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot, service, rebuild, and repair backflow prevention assemblies of varying sizes and configurations.
- Strong working knowledge of NFPA 25 – Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems.
- Experience inspecting, testing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing commercial fire sprinkler systems.
- Strong understanding of wet and dry pipe sprinkler systems and associated valves and equipment.
- Ability to read sprinkler drawings, system layouts, equipment documentation, and manufacturer instructions.
- Strong mechanical troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to accurately complete technical inspection and testing documentation.
- Valid BC driver's licence with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to safely perform the physical requirements associated with sprinkler fitting and service work.
Preferred Qualifications & Experience The ideal candidate will also have experience with:
- Dry pipe and pre-action sprinkler systems
- Fire pumps
- Standpipe systems
- Pressure reducing valves and pressure regulating devices
- Large-diameter backflow prevention assemblies
- Complex backflow troubleshooting and rebuilding
- Five-year standpipe and fire department connection testing
- Supervisory and waterflow devices associated with fire alarm systems
- Training or supervising apprentices and junior technicians
- Working directly with property managers, institutional clients, and authorities having jurisdiction
Pay: $50.00-$60.00 per hour
