Database Engineer

Remote (Halifax Canada)

12+ Month Contract

: We're seeking an experienced Database Engineer to design, maintain, optimize, and support enterprise-scale database environments. The ideal candidate brings strong database administration expertise, performance tuning skills, and hands-on Azure cloud experience, with a focus on database modernization initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

- Administer, maintain, and support large-scale production database environments
- Monitor database health, performance, availability, and capacity
- Perform database performance analysis, troubleshooting, and tuning
- Design and implement database solutions meeting business and technical requirements
- Develop and maintain backup, recovery, disaster recovery, and high-availability strategies
- Support database deployments, upgrades, patching, and system maintenance
- Collaborate with application development teams on database design and SQL query optimization
- Implement and enforce database security, access controls, and compliance requirements
- Create and maintain technical documentation and operational procedures
- Participate in on-call support and incident resolution
- Support cloud database platforms and database modernization initiatives

Required Qualifications:

- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)




- Minimum 5 years supporting large-scale enterprise database environments
- Strong hands-on experience with SQL Server, Azure SQL Database, Azure Managed Instance, Oracle, or PostgreSQL
- Experience with Microsoft Azure cloud services and database technologies
- Proven expertise in performance tuning, query optimization, indexing, and troubleshooting
- Strong understanding of backup, recovery, replication, and high-availability solutions
- Experience with database monitoring and performance management tools
- Knowledge of database security best practices and data governance
- Robust analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

- Database migration experience (on-prem to Azure, or cloud-to-cloud)
- Experience with Azure Database Migration Service (DMS)
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, ARM templates)
- Automation/scripting with PowerShell, Python, or Bash
- Experience with mission-critical, high-volume transactional databases
- Azure or database-related certifications a plus

Technical Skills:

- Required: Azure SQL Database, Azure Managed Instance, Microsoft SQL Server, Performance Tuning, Query Optimization, Index Management, Backup & Recovery, High Availability/Disaster Recovery, Database Monitoring
- Preferred: Database Migration Projects, Azure DMS, PowerShell/Python Automation, PostgreSQL/Oracle, CI/CD & DevOps, Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, ARM, Bicep)
