Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Red Seal Journeyman who is a highly organized Automotive Shop Foreman to oversee the day-to-day flow and operation of our automotive service shop.

This is a diverse, hands-on leadership role that goes well beyond simply supervising mechanical repairs. The Shop Foreman is responsible for keeping the entire shop floor organized and moving efficiently — coordinating technicians, tire technicians, apprentices, journeyperson technicians, vehicles, bays, parts, job priorities throughout the day, and possibly hopping on a vehicle to help the work flow or assist another technician.

Our facility is a large automotive shop with approximately 10 active service bays and additional space available for future expansion. With multiple vehicles and different types of work moving through the shop at the same time, organization, communication, leadership, and workflow management are critical to this position.

We service passenger vehicles and light-duty trucks and perform a variety of automotive services including tires, alignments, steering and suspension, brakes, oil changes, diagnostics, maintenance, and general automotive repair. We do not perform heavy-duty truck or heavy-equipment repair.

The ideal candidate understands automotive repair but, equally importantly, understands how to run a productive shop floor.

Responsibilities

- Oversee the daily operation and overall flow of the shop floor
- Organize and coordinate work across approximately 10 service bays, with the ability to adapt as additional bays and capacity are added
- Assign jobs to tire technicians, apprentices, and journeyperson automotive technicians based on skill level, workload, priority, and available shop capacity
- Monitor jobs throughout the day and adjust assignments as priorities, repair requirements, parts availability, or scheduling circumstances change
- Ensure vehicles move efficiently from arrival through inspection, diagnosis, repair, quality control, and completion
- Coordinate tire work, mechanical repairs, alignments, maintenance services, inspections, and other automotive work occurring simultaneously
- Maintain awareness of the status of every active job in the shop
- Identify workflow bottlenecks before they significantly impact productivity or customer completion times
- Coordinate with Service Advisors and other front-counter staff regarding job status, technician availability, delays, additional work, and expected completion times
- Coordinate incoming and outgoing parts, ensuring required parts are received, identified, organized, and directed to the appropriate vehicle or technician
- Ensure technicians are not unnecessarily waiting for parts, approvals, equipment, information, or work assignments
- Organize vehicles and bay usage to maximize shop capacity and minimize unnecessary vehicle movement or downtime
- Provide technical guidance and support to technicians and apprentices when required

- Assist with troubleshooting and determining the appropriate next steps when technicians encounter problems
- Ensure apprentices receive appropriate supervision and are assigned work suited to their experience and development
- Maintain consistent shop procedures and ensure employees follow established processes
- Ensure completed work meets company quality standards before vehicles leave the shop
- Help ensure inspections, documentation, work orders, and technician notes are completed properly
- Monitor technician productivity, efficiency, workmanship, and use of shop time
- Maintain a clean, organized, professional, and safe shop environment
- Ensure tools, equipment, hoists, alignment equipment, tire equipment, and shared work areas are being used appropriately
- Enforce workplace safety procedures and safe working practices
- Assist management in identifying operational problems and opportunities to improve shop procedures, productivity, capacity, and workflow
- Help develop and implement better processes as the automotive service operation continues to grow

What This Role Looks Like Day-to-Day This is not a position where the Foreman simply receives a list of jobs in the morning and supervises technicians from the sidelines.

On any given day, you may be:

- Determining which technician should receive the next mechanical job
- Moving a tire installation to another bay to free capacity for an alignment or mechanical repair
- Checking why a vehicle has stopped progressing through the shop
- Coordinating an apprentice with a journeyperson technician
- Confirming that parts have arrived for an active repair
- Reorganizing the day's workload after an unexpected repair or diagnosis
- Helping a technician troubleshoot a difficult job
- Communicating delays or changing completion times to the Service Advisors
- Ensuring completed vehicles have gone through the proper quality-control process
- Organizing the next group of vehicles entering the shop
- Identifying procedures that could be changed to make the shop operate more efficiently

The expectation is that the Shop Foreman knows what is happening throughout the shop and actively manages the flow of work rather than simply reacting when problems occur. Qualifications & Skills

- Previous experience in an automotive repair, dealership, tire, or automotive service environment
- Strong understanding of passenger vehicle and light-duty automotive repair and maintenance
- Previous experience as a Shop Foreman, Lead Technician, Shop Supervisor, Dispatcher, Service Manager, or similar automotive leadership position is strongly preferred

- Strong understanding of automotive shop workflow and technician dispatching. STRONG attention to detail
- Ability to coordinate multiple technicians, vehicles, jobs, and priorities simultaneously
- Strong organizational and time-management abilities
- Ability to make quick, practical decisions in a busy shop environment
- Strong leadership skills and the ability to hold employees accountable while maintaining a productive team environment
- Ability to communicate effectively with technicians, apprentices, Service Advisors, parts suppliers, and management
- Strong mechanical knowledge and ability to provide technical guidance when necessary
- Understanding of automotive diagnostics, brakes, steering and suspension, alignments, tires, maintenance, and general repair procedures
- Ability to recognize workmanship or quality-control concerns
- Strong understanding of automotive shop safety procedures
- Comfortable working with digital work orders, shop-management software, and electronic inspection processes
- Ability to remain organized and composed while managing a high-volume, constantly changing workload
- Journeyperson Automotive Service Technician certification is considered a strong asset, but leadership ability, automotive experience, and shop-management skills are equally important

The Person We're Looking For The successful candidate will be someone who naturally sees the entire shop rather than just the vehicle directly in front of them. You should be the type of person who notices when a technician is waiting for work, when a vehicle has been sitting too long, when a part hasn't arrived, when the wrong bay is being occupied, or when today's schedule needs to be reorganized before those issues become larger problems.

You must be comfortable providing direction, making decisions, solving problems, and keeping multiple moving pieces organized at once.

This position requires someone who can balance people management, mechanical knowledge, workflow coordination, quality control, parts coordination, and operational efficiency.

Why Join Us?

We operate a large and growing automotive service facility with approximately 10 service bays and additional room for expansion.

This position offers an opportunity to take a meaningful leadership role in how the shop operates as we continue to grow our automotive service business.

We are looking for someone who wants more than simply another technician position — we want someone who takes pride in building an organized, productive shop where technicians know what they are doing, vehicles keep moving, customers receive quality work, and the entire operation runs efficiently.

If you are an experienced automotive professional who enjoys leading people, solving problems, organizing workflow, and making a busy shop run properly, we would like to hear from you.

Pay: $40.00-$50.00 per hour
