Title: Shovel Build Supervisor

Location: Remote Camp, Alberta

Reporting to: Impact Mechanical Project Management

Impact has developed its project and cost-tracking systems in-house, giving customers detailed visibility into project progress and spending. The company continually evaluates how work is planned, organized, and delivered, using lessons learned in the field to improve productivity and project performance.

The Opportunity

This is a hands-on supervisory role leading the field execution of a Caterpillar 7495 shovel build in Northern Alberta. Working alongside established Lead Hands, you will oversee a multi-trade crew of 14–16 and keep the build progressing safely, efficiently, and in line with project milestones.

The role requires a leader who can plan several days ahead, coordinate people and resources, and anticipate what the crew needs before they become constraints. Equally important is a visible, practical leadership style that earns the respect of the crew and contributes to the strong camaraderie already established on site.

Key Responsibilities

As the Shovel Build Supervisor, you will work collaboratively and be responsible for:

1. Planning, Scheduling & Resource Coordination

- Develop daily and weekly work plans and maintain a 3–4 day look ahead based on Finning priorities, work packages, and project milestones.
- Coordinate daily tasking and resource assignments with Lead Hands, carrying incomplete work forward and adjusting priorities to keep work progressing in sequence.
- Review upcoming work packages and ensure required parts, tooling, lifting equipment, consumables, and kitted materials are identified, staged, and ready before crews begin work.
- Lead toolbox talks, shift handovers, and daily planning and update meetings, ensuring upcoming work, constraints, and resource requirements are clearly understood.

2. Crew Leadership, Safety & Culture

- Supervise mechanical, electrical, and support trades during assembly, testing, and commissioning.




- Enforce site safety requirements, support JHAs/PTAs and FLRAs, and stop work when conditions, behaviours, or changing circumstances create risk.
- Maintain an active field presence, providing practical direction and technical guidance while stepping in alongside the team when needed.
- Promote a culture of safety, quality, productivity, continuous improvement, and professional customer interaction.

3. Technical Oversight, Quality & Commissioning

- Oversee mechanical assembly and electrical installation in accordance with Caterpillar drawings and site engineering requirements.
- Verify critical quality requirements including torque values, alignment, weld quality, component tolerances, electrical terminations, inspections, and required sign-offs.
- Supervise functional testing and coordinate with commissioning teams through first energization, diagnostics, and verification of operational readiness.
- Identify and escalate technical concerns, NCRs, damaged components, design clarifications, and corrective actions through the appropriate Impact and Finning channels.

4. Communication, Reporting & Problem Solving

- Provide accurate daily shift reports and concise updates to leadership, clients, and project stakeholders.
- Communicate upcoming tasks, constraints, shortages, risks, delays, and deviations from plan early to Impact leadership, Finning, and relevant project stakeholders.
- Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical build issues and work with Lead Hands, engineering, and project management to develop and execute approved corrective actions.
- Maintain accurate tracking of parts, tooling, equipment, timesheets, work orders, NCRs, and project documentation required to support schedule, quality, and commercial requirements.

Qualifications

As the Shovel Build Supervisor, you will possess the following qualities:

The Essentials (Hard Skills):

- Proven supervisory experience leading multi-trade crews in an industrial, mining, heavy equipment, or field environment.
- Experience with shovels, including build, maintenance, or major repair work; Caterpillar 7495 experience is a strong asset.




- Strong planning and scheduling capability, with demonstrated ability to prioritize work, allocate resources, and maintain a 3–4 day look ahead.
- Practical mechanical knowledge combined with an understanding of industrial electrical work sufficient to effectively coordinate both disciplines.
- Ability to interpret work packages, drawings, specifications, and quality requirements and translate them into clear, executable work plans.
