About the job
Photon-IV Inc. · Waterloo, Ontario · Full-time · Hybrid
Photon-IV builds AI software that predicts satellite-to-terrestrial handovers before they happen, so critical connections don't drop. Our work is backed by a Department of National Defence contract. We're a small team solving a hard problem: keeping people connected in places where networks fail.
What you'll own
- The production engine: turning prediction models into reliable, low-latency software running as xApps and rApps on RIC platforms.
- The data layer: pipelines that ingest live network telemetry, feed the models, and log every decision for evaluation and replay.
- The integration layer: E2 and A1 interfaces, conformance with O-RAN specs, and making our software behave inside base stations we don't control.
- Performance under constraint: real-time deadlines, edge hardware limits, and graceful behaviour when inputs go bad.
- Test infrastructure: simulation, replay of field data, and the harnesses that prove the engine works before a customer does.
- Working directly with the leaders on milestones, demos, and customer-facing technical discussions.
What you bring
- 3+ years of hands-on software engineering shipping production systems, ideally at an early-stage company or a small team with big ownership.
- Solid skills in a systems language (C/C++, Rust,
or Go) plus Python for ML tooling and pipelines.
- Real experience taking software from prototype to production: testing, CI, monitoring, and the discipline to make things boring and reliable.
- Comfort with networking fundamentals: you know what happens between a packet leaving a radio and a metric landing in your pipeline.
- Comfort owning a build end to end with minimal structure, and the judgment to know what to prototype cheap and what to engineer properly.
- Eligibility for Canadian defence work: Canadian citizen or permanent resident, able to obtain a Government of Canada security clearance and to be registered under the Controlled Goods Program.
This is a hard requirement.
Nice to have
- O-RAN architecture exposure (xApps/rApps, RIC platforms, E2/A1 interfaces).
- ML engineering experience: training pipelines, model serving, or inference optimization.
- Telecom or RAN background (3GPP stack, handover procedures, network KPIs).
- Embedded/edge deployment experience (Jetson-class hardware, real-time constraints).
- Kubernetes or container orchestration in production.
Practical details
- Location: Waterloo, Ontario (hybrid); occasional field testing travel within Canada.
- Compensation: 65-80k
