Supportive Group Living Staff Member*

General Scope of the Position The Supportive Group Living Staff Member (Residential Care Worker) is to be responsible to the House Supervisor and Lead and to participate in the caring tasks of the team throughout daily operations.

Principal Duties

Company / Organizational Responsibilities

- Promote the agency’s mission, vision and objectives to celebrate the individuality of children, youth and adults with developmental disabilities and complex mental health needs through comprehensive, innovative programs and services focused on improving quality of life.
- Endorse the philosophy of privacy, dignity, independence, choice, rights, and fulfilment for all individuals.

Program-Level / Team Responsibilities

- Engage in personalized, goal-oriented programming to provide clients the highest quality of life in alignment with MSCS’s values of respect, inclusion, transparency, and person-centred care.
- Maintain a safe and supportive environment by applying Nonviolent Crisis Intervention techniques, including early intervention and verbal de-escalation.
- Implement and follow each individual’s Behaviour Support Plan.

Direct Individual Staff Responsibilities

- Establish positive relationships with individuals and offer unconditional regard.
- Provide daily advice, assistance, and support to help individuals address personal challenges.
- Provide care according to the established plan of care, ensuring emotional, spiritual, cultural, and physical comfort and safety.
- Assist with daily living activities, including bathing, dressing, feeding, and mobility support.
- Attend to practical household tasks, such as cooking, cleaning, and general maintenance.
- Maintain a clean, hygienic, and infection-controlled environment by following public health standards, sanitation practices, safe food-handling, and infection prevention protocols.
- Promote healthy living through physical activity, mental stimulation, healthy eating, and meaningful engagement.
- Engage in physically active tasks such as recreation, maintaining the home, and safely supporting individuals during behavioural escalation.
- Use trauma-informed, developmentally appropriate strategies to manage and de-escalate challenging behaviours in alignment with Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training (NVCI).
- Communicate any changes in an individual’s health, needs,



or living conditions to supervisors and the clinical team.
- Accurately document incidents, progress notes, and observations in accordance with organizational and statutory requirements.
- Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of, and strict adherence to, the agency’s Medication Policy and all related procedures. Administer medications safely and accurately in accordance with physician orders, regulatory requirements, and best practices in developmental services. Maintain secure control, proper documentation, and compliant storage of all medications, including controlled substances. Immediately report, document, and respond to any medication discrepancies or errors as outlined in agency policy, ensuring timely follow-up actions that prioritize client safety and continuity of care.

- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Other Responsibilities

- Understand the employer/employee requirements of Health and Safety legislation and support the House Supervisor and the designated Health and Safety Officer in ensuring compliance and training updates.
- Understand contents of fire procedures in the home. Support the House Supervisor to ensure that regular fire drills and training are carried out and recorded.
- Understand and promote within the workforce the importance of Sec.26 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act as it applies to the workforce of MSCS including:
- Use of protective equipment (including PPE)



and compliance with organizational and legislated regulations to promote safety in the workplace.
- Reporting of defective or broken safety equipment and any contraventions to the OHSA to the Health and Safety representative and maintenance team in a timely manner.
- Understand the requirements of valuable housekeeping, in accordance with public health and safety standards, and report concerns through the appropriate channels.
- Report any damage to building and equipment to Maintenance.
- Promote good relations with local community and support volunteers, relatives and caregivers.
- Any other duties within the scope of the home and those delegated by the house Supervisor.

General Requirements

- Take responsibility for the safeguarding of all individuals in care, and follow the Duty to Report policy as required.
- Participate in staff meetings.
- Complete all mandatory training within the specified timelines and due dates.
- Participate in all quality assurance systems.
- Take responsibility for professional development by keeping abreast of developments in the field of caring for our clients.
- Take responsibility for the health, safety and welfare of self and colleagues in accordance with the requirements of the Health and Safety Policies.

*Internally this position is titled “Supportive Group Living Staff” but is recognized under the Employment Standards Act (ESA) as a “Residential Care Worker”. A Residential Care Worker, under Ontario's ESA (O. Reg. 285/01), is a person who supervises and cares for children or individuals with developmental disabilities in a family-type residential dwelling while living there during their work periods, but is not a foster parent.
