About the Role
Outsyders is looking for a talented Depth Artist to join our 3D conversion team and help transform 2D film content into immersive, high-quality stereoscopic experiences.
As a Depth Artist, you will create and refine the depth information that forms the foundation of the 3D conversion process. You’ll analyze footage, interpret spatial relationships, build depth maps, and sculpt depth across complex film shots to create convincing foreground, midground, and background separation.
This is a highly visual role that combines artistic judgment, technical skill, and an understanding of cinematic storytelling. You’ll work closely with Stereo Leads, Supervisors and Stereo Compositors to translate creative depth direction into compelling, consistent results on screen.
This is a remote contract position through December 23, 2026, with possibility of extension. Preference will be given to candidates based in British Columbia or Quebec.
What You'll Do
- Create and refine depth maps and depth layers for 2D-to-3D film conversion.
- Interpret depth scripts and apply creative direction to establish compelling cinematic depth.
- Use roto, paint, and masking techniques to separate and refine foreground, midground, and background elements.
- Solve complex depth challenges including hair, fur, transparency, motion blur, defocus, and detailed environments.
- Review and refine work to maintain visual quality and depth continuity across shots and sequences.
- Collaborate with Stereo Supervisors, Compositors, and other artists to deliver high-quality work on schedule.
What We're Looking For
- 3+ years of experience in depth artistry, stereo conversion, or a related VFX discipline.
- Strong proficiency in Nuke and experience with roto, paint, masking, and depth workflows.
- Solid understanding of depth maps, Z-depth, disparity, perspective, and stereoscopic principles.
- Strong artistic eye for depth, spatial relationships, composition, and cinematic storytelling.
- Excellent attention to detail with the ability to work consistently across high shot volumes.
- Collaborative, reliable, and comfortable working in a fast-paced production environment.
Nice to Have
- Experience on theatrical 3D or stereo conversion projects.
- Experience with Nuke, Silhouette or proprietary depth tools.
- Familiarity with AI-assisted depth or machine-learning-based segmentation.
- Python or scripting experience.
- Background in matte painting, illustration, or other visually focused disciplines.
