About Our Opportunity As a Correctional Officer, you are responsible for the safe, secure custody, control and supervision of sentence and remand persons in an adult correctional facility on a rotating shift basis. Your duties include supervision of persons in custody living units, admission and discharge, reception/visitation, recreation, laundry, and canteen services. You also maintain administrative functions related to the case management database (JEIN) and the Offender Behavioural Management System. Primary Accountabilities Facility Security – Dynamic supervision of persons in custody and safe, secure custody, control, and supervision. Persons in Custody Supervision – Participate in case management, approve visits, escort persons in custody, respond to complaints, document requests, and supervise work activities. Physical Plant Maintenance – Supervise facility cleaning, manage outside work details, and submit maintenance work orders. Programs – Advise on available programs, adhere to posted schedules, and support program work in living units. Administration & Communication – Record and communicate information through reports, forms, logbooks, email, and JEIN documentation; participate in committees or meetings as requested. Qualifications and Experience You possess a High School diploma and 2 years of related experience. Equivalent combinations of training and experience will be considered. Experience in law enforcement, the court system, security or the military.



Knowledge or experience in a computerized/automated environment. Experience working with Indigenous and African Nova Scotian communities and comprehensive cultural knowledge. Ability to speak the Mi’kmaq Language. Leadership experience with vulnerable populations, youth programs, or committees. Experience in restorative practices. Equivalency Related 2‑year post‑secondary diploma. Related 1‑year post‑secondary diploma plus 1 year of related experience. 5 years of employment in a related field. Additional Information Candidates selected for an interview will receive a medical assessment form from an approved clinic. The facility operates 24 hours, is tobacco‑free, and requires casual officers to work shift work, including day, night, holidays, and weekends on short notice. Candidates must hold a valid driver’s license, driver’s abstract, and First Aid/CPR certification. Assessment Process Qualified applicants will be invited to a competency‑based interview. Candidates must demonstrate strong communication, interpersonal, and conflict‑resolution skills. All selected candidates must provide an Emergency First Aid Certificate, a Vulnerable Sector Check, and a Criminal Record Check.
