Job Summary Position: Youth Worker (Casual Relief) Location: Waterville, Nova Scotia Department: Justice Employment Type: Relief Closing Date: 23‑Nov‑25 (Applications accepted until 11:59 PM Atlantic Time) Division Overview The Correctional Services division of the Department of Justice maintains a just, peaceful, and safe society by administering and operating community and custody‑based programs and services for adult and young persons in custody. Responsibilities Assist with the reintegration, safe secure care, and control of young persons in a secure facility for youth. Plan, organize, and implement a variety of programs and services to meet the needs of young persons in custody, including restorative activities and individual and group programs such as Options to Anger, Voices & Substance Abuse Education, and orientation for new youth. Develop and implement effective individualized case plans and prepare administrative reports related to young persons in custody, including custodial progress reports for youth court disposition review. Maintain the case management database (JEIN) and document daily activities.
Ensure institutional security requirements are met and hold youth accountable for breaches in behaviour. Serve as a role model, encouraging pro‑social behaviour and demonstrating an approach compatible with the institution's goals. Conduct custody counts, searches, write reports, and perform safe escort movements throughout the facility. Qualifications and Experience Bachelor’s Degree in a social science (Criminology, Sociology, Psychology, Education or Recreation) or a related community college certificate/diploma with directly related experience. Experience in a correctional setting is advantageous; an acceptable equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered. Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills. Attention to detail, strong leadership, and problem‑solving skills. Ability to make good decisions and respond appropriately to crisis situations. Capability to work well with minimal supervision and maintain discretion with confidential matters. Required Credentials Current copy of Emergency First Aid Certificate. Vulnerable Sector Check with Criminal Record Check and a Child Abuse Registry Check. Assessment Tools Written examination,
