POSITION:Fire Prevention OfficerSTATUS:Full-Time PermanentSALARY:LEVEL 5Min $69,561 – Max $104,341DATE OF POSTING:April 27, 2026END OF POSTING:May 11, 2026, at 5:00 pmDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESFire prevention responsibilitiesServe as the lead resource for community fire safety matters, providing advice to the Fire Chief, Council, and community members.Ensure that all applicable policies, procedures, by‑laws, as well as territorial, provincial and federal regulations, are implemented.Contribute to the development of community fire safety policies based on knowledge and the results of inspections.Develop and implement public education programs and activities on fire prevention and safety to raise awareness and educate the community on various methods of preventing and responding to fires.Build and maintain partnerships with local organizations, schools, and businesses to strengthen community engagement and participation in fire prevention initiatives.Collaborate with regional forest‑fire groups to ensure the prevention of forest fires, and prompt response in the event of forest fires.Collaborate and share information with the Cree Nation Government regarding fire prevention programs and activities, as applicable.Respond to complaints concerning fire hazards, provide recommendations and support enforcement as needed.Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of public education and fire prevention programs and recommend improvements to enhance community safety outcomes.Inspection responsibilitiesOversee the inspection program that will meet fire safety standards at all public and private buildings in accordance with applicable legislation and community by‑laws.Conduct fire prevention inspections of dwellings, public, and private buildings to ensure compliance with fire safety codes and regulations.Perform inspections of firefighting equipment, fire hydrants, and fire trucks to ensure they are accessible,



meet minimum safety standards and are fully operational.Test fire protection equipment (e.G., smoke detectors, fire alarms, exit signs, emergency lighting, etc.) to ensure proper functionality and compliance with safety standards and document the results for maintenance and reporting purposes.Make recommendations on the replacement and/or repair of fire safety/prevention equipment.Examine the storage, handling, and use of flammable and combustible liquids and other hazardous materials and make recommendations to ensure safe use.Identify and document hazards, and collaborate with community members, building owners, or occupants to resolve safety concerns.Monitor and perform follow‑up inspections to ensure that corrective actions have been taken and compliance is maintained.Issue orders to comply with codes and by‑laws where non‑compliance is found and follow through with appropriate enforcement measures.Firefighting training responsibilitiesEvaluate the knowledge and skills of firefighters to identify training needs.Propose training programs to the Fire Chief and contribute to the development of the annual training plan.Research technological changes and recommend new programs, tools, and procedures to enhance fire prevention and response capacity.Lead training sessions to maintain and advance firefighting and fire prevention skills within the team.Administrative and reporting responsibilitiesMaintain an up‑to‑date inventory of materials and supplies for all firefighting equipment and vehicles; make recommendations and purchase inventory as required.Prepare and submit detailed inspection reports, including findings,



recommendations and follow‑up actions to the Fire Chief to support community fire safety planning and policy development.Prepare and submit reports to the Fire Chief on fire prevention and public education programs delivered, including participation, attendance records, community feedback, and engagement outcomes, to support evaluation and continuous improvement.Maintain proper file management of inspection reports, orders, training records, program documents to ensure efficient retrieval of information and compliance with reporting requirements.Additional responsibilitiesMaintain up‑to‑date knowledge and skills in area(s) of responsibility.Perform other duties as required.EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTSEducation and certificationHigh School Diploma with additional training program in fire protection technology or related fieldLevel 1 Firefighter NFPA 1001 (Fire Protection Technology) certificateValid Class 4A Driver’s licenseFirst aid certification.ExperienceOne to three years of relevant experienceLanguagesFluency in Cree and EnglishFluency in French is an assetKnowledge and abilities:Knowledge of fire prevention technology and techniques.Customer focused and service oriented.Proven ability to communicate effectively.Proven ability to be discreet and maintain confidentiality.Demonstrated attention to detail and accuracy.Proven organizational skills.Robust judgment and proven ability to problem solve.Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and to adapt to a changing environment.Working knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office products.Additional RequirementsWork involves a combination of office tasks and field inspections, which may require moderate physical effort and work in various weather conditions.Must work according to regulatory standards.EMPLOYEE BENEFITSSpecial Allowance and Education PremiumEmployer‑provided housing is not available for this position.#J-18808-Ljbffr
