The Opportunity
We are seeking a patient, engaging, and enthusiastic Math & Chess Tutor to work one-on-one with a 9-year-old student after school two days per week.
The ideal candidate will have a robust foundation in mathematics and chess and, most importantly, the ability to make learning enjoyable and engaging for a young student. Sessions will combine structured math support with chess instruction, helping build problem-solving skills, confidence, and strategic thinking.
Key Responsibilities
Provide one-on-one tutoring two afternoons per week after school.
Support the student with age-appropriate mathematics, including reinforcing concepts taught at school and building stronger foundational skills.
Identify areas where additional math practice or instruction would be beneficial.
Introduce and develop chess skills, including rules, tactics, strategy, openings, and game analysis appropriate to the student's level.
Use games, puzzles, challenges, and other interactive approaches to keep sessions engaging.
Encourage critical thinking,
problem-solving, patience, and confidence.
Adapt lessons to the student's learning style, interests, and progress.
Provide occasional updates to the family regarding progress and areas of focus.
Qualifications
Robust proficiency in mathematics and chess.
Previous experience tutoring, teaching, coaching, mentoring, or working with children is strongly preferred.
Ability to explain concepts clearly and in an age-appropriate way.
Patient, positive, dependable, and comfortable working one-on-one with a 9-year-old.
Able to make lessons interactive and enjoyable while maintaining structure.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
University or college students with a solid background in mathematics, education, engineering, computer science, or a related field are encouraged to apply.
Competitive chess experience or formal chess coaching experience is an asset.
