A global Natural Resources company headquartered in Canada is seeking an experienced Payroll Manager – SuccessFactors to join its team. This is a senior payroll leadership position responsible for overseeing payroll operations, perks administration, compliance, reporting, and continuous improvement across a complex organization.
The successful candidate will bring significant payroll experience, strong technical knowledge, and the ability to lead a team while working closely with internal stakeholders, external providers, and advisors.
This opportunity is open to candidates located anywhere in Canada and may be particularly well suited to professionals with experience in mining, oil & gas, construction, engineering, energy, or other organizations with complex or multi-jurisdictional payroll environments.
Responsibilities:
- Lead and oversee payroll operations, ensuring employees are paid accurately, on time, and in accordance with applicable legislation and company policies.
- Provide leadership, direction, coaching, and mentorship to the payroll team.
- Oversee payroll and perks administration across multiple jurisdictions and employee groups.
- Manage complex payroll requirements, including employees working across jurisdictions or international assignments.
- Oversee expatriate payroll processes and coordinate with internal teams and external advisors as required.
- Ensure payroll data is accurate, complete, and appropriately reviewed before processing.
- Manage payroll-related tax requirements, reporting, reconciliations, remittances, and year-end activities.
- Oversee the preparation and distribution of required employee tax documentation and government filings.
- Work closely with Finance on payroll accounting, reconciliations, journal entries, reporting, and other payroll-related financial matters.
- Partner with HR and other internal stakeholders on employee changes, leaves, onboarding, departures, compensation, and benefits.
- Oversee employee benefits administration and work with external providers to ensure programs are administered effectively.
- Manage relationships with payroll, benefits, tax, and other external service providers.
- Act as a subject matter expert on payroll systems, processes, legislation, and best practices.
- Lead payroll system enhancements, implementations, integrations, and other technology-related initiatives.
- Identify opportunities to improve payroll processes, controls, documentation, and overall employee service.
- Maintain appropriate procedures, controls, documentation, and backup processes to support business continuity.
- Monitor changes to payroll legislation and ensure processes remain compliant.
- Support audits and respond to payroll-related inquiries from internal and external stakeholders.
- Participate in broader HR, payroll, mobility, and process improvement initiatives as required.
Qualifications:
- 8+ years of progressive payroll experience, with significant experience in a leadership or management capacity.
- Strong experience managing complex payroll environments, preferably within a large or multi-jurisdictional organization.
- Hands-on experience with SAP SuccessFactors Payroll is required.
- National Payroll Institute PCP designation required.
- Experience with expatriate or international payroll is considered a strong asset.
- Experience working with employees across multiple provinces or jurisdictions is preferred.
- Strong understanding of Canadian payroll legislation, taxation, remittances, year-end reporting, and compliance requirements.
- Strong knowledge of payroll controls, reconciliations, reporting, and payroll accounting.
- Experience managing or supporting payroll system implementations and process improvements.
- Strong Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities and strict deadlines.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively with HR, Finance, external advisors, vendors, and senior stakeholders.
- High level of discretion and professionalism when handling confidential employee and compensation information.
- Proven ability to lead, develop, and motivate a payroll team.
- Proactive and solutions-oriented with a strong focus on accuracy and service.
