Position SummaryBCIT’s Campus Planning and Facilities department is seeking one regular, full‑time Electrician. This position carries out planned and emergency maintenance, repair, and installation of institute electrical systems including fire alarms, communications, signaling and time‑keeping systems, emergency lighting, standby power systems, and instructional equipment.ResponsibilitiesRespond to trouble calls, troubleshoot problems on a wide variety of systems, and prioritize action based on impact on property and public safety.Establish priorities and requirements for the Preventative Maintenance (PM) Plan, inspecting and maintaining items required for regulatory compliance.Conduct preventative maintenance on interconnected systems, printing daily schedules, inspecting, identifying deficiencies, and taking corrective action.Estimate labor and materials for renovations, upgrades, and projects, reviewing drawings, sketches, and specifications and making recommendations for improvements.Communicate with individuals from a variety of BCIT departments and external contractors, including managing difficult or upset clients and explaining system interrelations.Continuously learn about advances in system and equipment design, adopting new components and parts, and staying current on new technology and regulatory requirements.Upgrade existing systems to more modern and efficient options.Prepare drawings, sketches, layout diagrams, and estimates for internal projects and required work.Adhere to and promote safety standards required by regulatory bodies consistent with the assigned work.Maintain an inventory of electrical supplies and prepare work orders and purchase requisitions, maintaining records of work performed and completing work control forms.Coordinate and monitor contractor work to ensure adherence to established standards.Make recommendations and suggestions for improvement to Program Coordinators on various building projects on campus.Maintain electrical systems such as circuits, wiring, conduits, switchgear, motors and controls,



appliances, lighting equipment, and fixtures, fuses, circuit breakers, and panels.Perform minor cutting, drilling, and patching of building fabric and structure.Maintain fire alarm and communication systems: performing routine inspections, installing new components, isolating and repairing faults, participating in monthly fire alarm tests, and preparing and updating procedures relating to alarm systems.Maintain and repair electrical components of instructional equipment such as shears, welding machines, saws, power rollers, drill presses, overhead cranes, pipe bevelers, pipe cutting machines, thickness planers, jointers, doweling machines, diesel motors, electrical test benches, lathes, boring machines, milling machines, CNC machines, and heat‑treatment equipment.Operate and work on mobile man lift machinery.Record meter readings of power distribution and emergency lighting systems.Hold electrical permits on behalf of the Institute.Undertake related duties as assigned consistent with the job grade of this position.QualificationsA valid Trades Qualification or an Interprovincial Trades Ticket (Journey person status) plus technical education and/or certifications in the relevant building trades industry, and two (2) years of general trades experience plus up to four (4) years of current relevant experience in the building trades industry.Ability to assess blueprints and make recommendations for specific trade requirements is an asset.Must be able to work independently.Proven ability to troubleshoot and resolve related issues in conjunction with the assigned level of skill, ability,
