The focus of the Indigenous Family Counsellor is to provide school counselling services to Indigenous students through a cultural lens, using cultural resources and themes.



The Indigenous Family Counsellor will utilize Indigenous cultural practices to create a safe and caring setting for Indigenous students that are seeking school counsellor supports.This is an itinerant district position with primary responsibility for schools in Kamloops and surrounding communities. Direct service to students and consultative service to staff, parents and administrators is provided in different schools and across a variety of settings. Effective liaison with parents, teachers, administrators, health care professionals and outside agencies is a critical aspect of this position. Travel within the district is required. This position is excluded; the successful candidate will not be a member of the KTTA or CUPE.This is a position of Special Responsibility and will be filled by competition.ResponsibilitiesProviding culturally-relevant school counselling and consultative services to Indigenous students using Indigenous resourcesProvision of support for a student’s individual crisis such as a traumatic emotional experienceConsulting with and coordinating referrals and counselling services with school district staff and community professionalsMaintaining student files in confidential cabinets in designated locations as per district policy and procedureActing as a community and family liaison for in school programmingFacilitating referrals to outside agencies as neededFacilitating appropriate transportation for students to access support servicesAttending interagency case meetings, district screening meetings, case conferences and school-based meetings,
