Risk Manager
Our client is seeking an experienced Risk Manager to join its organization and play a key role in strengthening its overall risk management capabilities. Reporting to the Chief Risk Officer, this position will work across the business to identify potential exposures, evaluate controls, provide meaningful risk insight, and support sound decision-making.
The successful candidate will have experience within financial services and a strong understanding of risk management within a regulated environment. This role offers broad exposure across enterprise, operational, third-party, fraud, business continuity, and insurance-related risk.
The Opportunity
This position will be instrumental in supporting the continued development of the organization's risk management framework and helping embed effective risk practices throughout the business.
Key areas of focus will include:
- Supporting the continued evolution of the enterprise risk management program.
- Maintaining risk policies, standards, processes, and governance documentation.
- Ensuring risk practices appropriately reflect applicable regulatory requirements.
- Helping establish and maintain effective risk appetite and governance practices.
- Identifying emerging risks and providing insight into their potential business impact.
Assessing the Risk Landscape
- Coordinate risk identification and assessment activities across the organization.
- Facilitate Risk and Control Self-Assessments and related control reviews.
- Evaluate strategic, operational, regulatory, reputational, and other material risk exposures.
- Maintain enterprise risk profiles, registers, and supporting documentation.
- Identify trends and emerging issues that may require management attention.
- Work with business areas to develop appropriate risk mitigation strategies.
Turning Risk Data into Insight
- Establish and monitor Key Risk Indicators, risk appetite measures, and other relevant metrics.
- Analyze risk information to identify trends, weaknesses, and developing exposures.
- Prepare clear and concise reporting for senior leadership and governance committees.
- Provide meaningful recommendations to support informed business decisions.
- Escalate significant risk matters and emerging concerns when appropriate.
Strengthening Controls & Resolving Issues
- Coordinate the assessment and documentation of significant risk events and incidents.
- Assist with investigations and root-cause analysis.
- Work with business leaders to identify appropriate corrective and preventative actions.
- Monitor remediation plans and follow up on outstanding issues.
- Track control deficiencies and ensure appropriate documentation and governance.
- Help identify opportunities to improve processes and strengthen the organization's control environment.
Regulatory Readiness
- Support regulatory examinations, internal audits, compliance reviews, and other assurance activities.
- Monitor changes to applicable regulatory requirements and assess their implications.
- Assist business areas in understanding and addressing regulatory expectations.
- Ensure risk documentation, processes,
and practices remain appropriate for a regulated financial services environment.
- Contribute to the organization's ongoing readiness for regulatory and assurance activities.
Building Risk Awareness Across the Business
- Serve as a trusted resource to business leaders and functional teams on risk-related matters.
- Provide practical guidance on risk assessment, mitigation, and control design.
- Promote accountability for risk ownership throughout the organization.
- Develop and deliver guidance or training on risk processes, tools, and methodologies.
- Establish strong relationships with stakeholders and effectively influence outcomes.
- Encourage a proactive approach to identifying and addressing risk.
The Ideal Candidate
- 5+ years of relevant experience in risk management, audit, compliance, or a related functions.
- Experience working in a regulated financial institution.
- Strong knowledge of enterprise risk management principles and practices.
- Experience with risk assessments, RCSAs, KRIs, risk reporting, risk registers, and risk appetite frameworks.
- Familiarity with OSFI requirements and expectations applicable to federally regulated financial institutions.
- Professional designation such as FRM, CRM, CFA, or equivalent is considered an asset.
- Robust analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking capabilities.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
- Ability to develop effective relationships and work collaboratively with stakeholders at all levels.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise sound professional judgment and handle sensitive matters with discretion.
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and capable of managing competing priorities.
