Senior Manager, Tax & Advanced Planning – Remote, Canada
Objective Financial Partners is looking for an experienced Canadian tax professional to join our team.
We are Canada's largest advice-only financial planning firm. We help clients make financial decisions without selling investments, insurance, or other financial products.
This is not a traditional accounting or law firm role. If you enjoy solving complex tax problems but would rather spend less time preparing tax returns, recording billable hours, managing tax deadlines, developing business, or building a book of clients, this may be a good fit.
The Role
We are looking for someone who can serve as a senior technical resource for our 15-member financial planning team. Our planners regularly work with incorporated business owners, retirees, executives, investors, and families with significant assets. Tax considerations are often an important part of financial planning.
You will help our planners work through complex situations, evaluate alternatives, identify risks, and incorporate tax considerations into their recommendations. You will also help improve the tax knowledge of our team through training, case discussions, technical resources, and ongoing education.
You may participate in client meetings alongside a planner when additional technical expertise would be helpful.
Responsibilities
- Serve as an internal advanced planning and tax resource for our CFP and Pl. Fin. financial planning professionals
- Research complex tax issues that arise in financial planning engagements
- Review and provide technical input on planning recommendations
- Help planners evaluate the tax implications of different planning strategies
- Develop internal resources, guidelines, and best practices
- Deliver training, tax updates, and case studies
- Help develop technical resources, webinars, and continuing education content for planners and other professionals
- Contribute tax expertise to media opportunities
- Help identify situations where outside legal or specialist tax advice may be appropriate
- Support education, process improvement, and knowledge sharing across the Objective group of companies, including Objective Tax & Accounting and Objective Planning Solutions
What You Will Not Be Doing This role is designed for someone who enjoys technical work and helping others.
You will not be expected to:
- Prospect for clients
- Bring a book of business
- Meet sales targets
- Sell investments or insurance
- Gather or manage client assets
- Build a standalone tax practice
- Spend most of your time preparing tax returns
- Meet billable-hour targets
Qualifications
You should have
- A strong commitment to client service
- A collaborative approach and an interest in being part of a supportive, high-performing team
- A Canadian CPA designation, a law degree and substantial Canadian tax experience, or equivalent senior-level Canadian tax expertise
- Strong Canadian income tax knowledge
- Significant experience with Canadian corporate and personal taxation, ideally supported by completion of the CPA In-Depth Tax Program or comparable advanced tax education
- Strong research and problem-solving skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- The ability to explain complex concepts in plain English
- Sound professional judgment and attention to detail
- An interest in financial planning
Experience with owner-managed businesses, retirement planning, estate planning, and investment taxation would be particularly valuable. A CFP, Pl. Fin., or TEP designation is an asset but not required. Experience training, mentoring, presenting, developing educational content,
or providing technical support to other professionals would also be an asset.
Who Might Enjoy This Role?
This role may appeal to an experienced tax professional working in public practice, a tax or estate planning practice, wealth management, banking, a family office, government, or a corporate tax role who enjoys the technical side of tax more than business development or production work.
You will probably enjoy this position if you are the person colleagues call when they run into a difficult question and you like researching issues, thinking through alternatives, and helping others find practical solutions. You should also enjoy working collaboratively with a great team and care about providing an excellent experience for clients.
Compensation and Work Workplace
Salary range: $125,000-$175,000 , depending on experience, qualifications, and depth of Canadian tax-planning expertise.
This is a full-time, permanent position. Objective is a fully remote Canadian company, and you can work from anywhere in Canada.
