Mainframe Application Designer (Mech/CADS)

Hybrid/Onsite: Remote with flexibility hybrid
Engagement Type: 6-12 month contract-to-hire
A large financial-services organization is seeking Mainframe Application Designers to bridge business requirements, systems analysis, solution design, and technical delivery across core deposit and debit-card applications.
Specific Functions of This Role
- Work closely with business partners to provide current and future state for a variety of business initiatives/LOBs for core banking applications
- Dive deeply into application logic and environments to assess business impacts and identify development changes.
- Work collaboratively through all SDLC stages, with a variety of stakeholder groups to provide context and oversight. Coach junior staff on technical and business concepts.
- Ensuring BMO code standards are maintained by taking part in code, testing and document reviews
Responsibilities
- Work with business partners to define current and future application states.
- Analyze existing application logic and code.
- Assess business and system impacts.
- Determine the application changes required to support new initiatives.
- Produce technical designs, impact assessments, and supporting documentation.
- Translate between business and technical stakeholders.
- Guide developers through implementation.
- Participate in code, testing, and document reviews.
- Provide oversight across all SDLC stages.
- Coach junior staff on technical and business concepts.
Qualifications
- In-depth knowledge of large core banking processing, and mainframe environments
- 10 - 15+ years of system design, analysis and mainframe programming experience
- Knowledge of assembler, CICS and DB2 are assets
- Extensive mainframe systems analysis or application-design experience.
- Core banking, deposit, payment, or transaction-processing knowledge.
- Ability to read and understand mainframe code.
- Solid current-state and impact-analysis skills.
- Experience creating technical design documentation.
- Business-facing communication experience.
- Ability to explain complex concepts to different audiences.
- Broad, big-picture understanding of integrated systems.
- Strong analytical skills for complex problem solving
- Excellent communications skills with the ability to adapt message/concept to different audiences – both business and technical
Preferred Qualifications
- Assembler, CICS, and DB2.
- COBOL or PL/I.
- Solution architecture.
- Business systems analysis.
- Banking modernization initiatives.
- Experience guiding distributed development teams.

This individual will combine the thinking of a business analyst, systems analyst, solution designer, and technical architect while remaining grounded in application code and delivery realities.
