Job Summary

TheIndigenous Cultural Liaison at Phoenix Society offers Indigenous knowledge andperspectives and works closely with Indigenous service recipients to connectthem with culturally specific supports in the community, while advocating fortheir access and rights as needed. This support includes but is not limited to;coordinating and supporting cultural activities and programs, informing caseplans, and connecting service recipients to external organizations and agenciesthat provide additional assistance.

Service Recipient Services

- Acton issues that affect the Indigenous cultural safety in MHSU programs
- Actas a cultural advocate for Indigenous service recipients during their stay atMHSU programs
- Providesinformation to service recipients, families and communities regarding theprovision and access to culturally safe, trauma informed mental health andsubstance use care programs and services.
- Coordinatesservice recipients/family spiritual care requests and/or access to sacredspaces within and around the program to support Indigenous practices, beliefsand customs.
- Maintainaccurate client records (e.g., assessment data, client care plan, goal setting,case notes and discharge summaries, behaviour contracts, incident reports,etc.), reports, and statistics required by management
- Ensurethat all required documentation is complete and on time
- Demonstratingknowledge of Indigenous traditions by teaching crafts and traditional handwork.

Program Management

- Contributesto the development and implementation of cultural programming, teachings andevents, including presentations; information sessions; workshops; andactivities.
- Participatesin planning, development and implementation of culturally safe, trauma informedactivities at MHSU programs
- Maintaindatabase of cultural diversity activities, participation and referrals orconnections.
- Providemonthly and annual reports to the Senior Manager, Mental Health & SubstanceUse Programs as requested




- Participatesin the planning and development of quality improvement activities throughmethods such as providing input to the planning processes and participates inprogram wide quality improvement initiatives, as required
- Performsother related duties as assigned.

CommunityRelations

- Establishes effective working relationships withcommunity-based agencies and Indigenous groups to facilitate accessible andeffective culturally secure, trauma informed service recipient care.
- Worksin collaboration with other disciplines to develop and maintain a list ofrelevant Indigenous community-based agencies. Provides a link and liaison servicebetween service recipients and these agencies.
- Maintaincurrent knowledge of social, economic, recreational and educational resourcesin the community.

Qualifications

- Post-secondarydiploma (e.g., 2 to 3 years) in community social service, counselling, socialwork, psychology, etc.
- At least2 years of relevant experience working with Indigenous populations andcomprehensive understanding and experience delivering culturally safe, traumainformed care.
- Prioritywill be given to applicants of Indigenous Ancestry
- Demonstratedknowledge of cultural competency principles and practices
- Satisfactorycompletion of a criminal records check with vulnerable sector screening isrequired
- Satisfactorycompletion of a Tuberculosis Screening form is required
- Satisfactorycompletion of Employee Immunization Record form is required
- First Aidcertification with CPR is required
- Validdriver’s license is required
