To provide the public, farmers, consultants, extension specialists, and research scientists with an analytical service for surface and ground waters, waste waters, soil, feed, seed, plant tissue, manure, and compost samples. The results produced by the laboratory should service as a basis to determine compliance of drinking water samples with the Canadian Drinking Water Guidelines, to optimize efficiency of resource inputs, diagnose problems and assure general sustainable resource practices. All analytical results must be carried out in a manner consistent with the Laboratory’s Accreditation to the international standard for the competency of testing and calibration labs, ISO/IEC 17025.
Duties will include but are not limited to:
Sample preparation and analysis of different sample types including drinking water, fresh and marine surface water, wastewater and recreational water;
Performance of microbiological and physical tests;
Preparation of media for analysis;
Use of Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) for sample tracking;
Assistance with testing and record keeping for accreditation purposes;
Evaluation of quality control samples for the purpose of accessing acceptability of sample results;
Verification of sample identification and analysis requested;
Guidance to clients regarding sampling procedures and analysis;
Maintenance for analytical equipment used in Microbiology Lab;
Receive samples from clients, enter tombstone data in LIMS;
Receive payments from clients and provide receipts;
Cleaning and sterilization of lab supplies;
Other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
Diploma from a recognized Laboratory Studies or Environmental Technology course is required.
Demonstrated equivalencies will be considered.
Some experience working in a laboratory setting.
Experience working in an accredited laboratory would be an asset.
A valuable working knowledge of computer software including work processing spreadsheets and databases.
Good oral and written communication skills.
Ability to work in a team environment.
Course work in WHMIS, First Aid, statistics, Internal Auditing would be an asset.
Experience working with a laboratory information management system would be an asset.
Must have good previous work and attendance and be able to work with minimal supervision.
