The Orthoptist I performs advanced-level eye function measurements and ancillary tests to assist ophthalmologists in diagnosing and treating eye disorders and diseases. As an important member of the ophthalmic team working primarily with pediatric ophthalmologists and neuro ophthalmologists, the Orthoptist is responsible for ensuring that patients are triaged appropriately and seen in a timely fashion. They will participate in educational rounds and in-services, and maintain good medical knowledge in ocular anatomy, pharmacology, diseases, and management, including current available treatments and clinical trials. They must also understand infection control in terms of proper sterilization and disinfection.

As an Orthoptist, you will perform advanced-level eye function measurements and ancillary tests to assist ophthalmologists in diagnosing and treating eye disorders and diseases. You will participate in research studies, educational rounds and in-services, and maintain valuable medical knowledge of ocular anatomy, pharmacology, diseases, and management, including current available treatments and clinical trials.

Required Qualifications:
Completion of an orthoptic course from an accredited institution.Active membership with the Canadian Orthoptic Council (COC).

Additional Required Qualifications:
Current member of the Canadian Orthoptic Council is required. Orthoptic course from an accredited institution required. Minimum of three years' experience as an Orthoptist in a pediatric clinic setting preferred. Certification as an Orthoptist from the Canadian Orthoptic Council is required.

Preferred Qualifications:
Additional training and certification as an Ophthalmic Medical Technologist is preferred. The successful applicant will be self-directed and relate well to health team professional professionals, patients and families; have great critical thinking skills; possess excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills; set priorities and make decisions that are appropriate to the position; and lead with the AHS values.
