Role Description The Addiction Counsellor is an on-site role based in Chatham-Kent, ON. The counsellor provides individual and group counseling to clients experiencing substance use and related mental health concerns, using trauma-informed and recovery-oriented approaches.

Day-to-day responsibilities include developing and updating treatment plans, facilitating psychoeducational and therapeutic groups, maintaining accurate clinical documentation, and collaborating with an interdisciplinary team. The role also involves coordinating with external service providers, supporting aftercare and relapse prevention planning, and participating in case conferences and staff meetings. The counsellor is expected to uphold qualified ethics, contribute to a positive therapeutic environment, and engage in ongoing professional development.

Qualifications

- Strong counseling, case management,



and crisis intervention skills, with the ability to work effectively with individuals and groups affected by addiction.
- Knowledge of substance use disorders, relapse prevention, and evidence-based treatment modalities such as CBT and motivational interviewing.
- Excellent communication, documentation, and interpersonal skills, including the ability to build rapport, maintain boundaries, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
- Ability to work in a structured residential or treatment setting, manage competing priorities, and maintain professionalism in high-stress situations.
- Post-secondary education in addictions counseling, or a related human services field; relevant certification or registration (e.g., addiction worker, counseling association) is an asset.
- Experience in addiction treatment, mental health, or community support services, preferably in a clinical or residential environment.
- Commitment to trauma-informed, culturally safe, and non-discriminatory practice, with sensitivity to diverse backgrounds and lived experiences.
- Ability to comply with applicable regulations, privacy legislation, and organizational policies; familiarity with Canadian health and social service systems is beneficial.
