Company Description Scratch Coding for Kids (SC4K) is an educational institute that offers online coding classes for learners aged 4 to 18 across Canada, the USA, and the United Kingdom, with headquarters in Toronto, Canada. Established in 2021, SC4K has already supported over 250 students through a team of experienced IT professionals who bring more than 5 years of industry expertise. The institute provides a structured curriculum with six levels, covering a wide range of programming languages and tools such as Scratch, Python, JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Java, C++, and HatchXR.
SC4K focuses on STEM-based, project-driven learning that builds creativity, critical thinking, innovation, teamwork, logical thinking, and presentation skills. Students create games, stories, animations, quizzes, music, and robotics projects while gaining practical experience in testing, debugging, and presenting their work.
Role Description The Coding Tutor/Mentor (Python) will provide in-person instruction and guidance to children and youth at SC4K’s Markham and Scarborough, ON location in a part-time capacity. Day-to-day responsibilities include teaching Python fundamentals and project-based coding concepts, adapting lesson plans to different age groups and skill levels, and supporting students with school-related programming work and competition preparation. The tutor/mentor will lead interactive sessions where learners design, code, test, and debug their projects, offering constructive feedback and encouraging problem-solving and creativity.
The role also involves mentoring older students on coding best practices, basic software development workflows, and fostering confidence in presenting their projects. Collaboration with other instructors, maintaining a safe and inclusive classroom environment, and providing regular progress updates to parents/guardians are also key aspects of this position.
Qualifications
- Strong Python programming skills and familiarity with introductory to intermediate computer science concepts relevant to children and teens.
- Experience teaching, tutoring, or mentoring youth in coding or STEM subjects, with the ability to adjust explanations for different age ranges.
- Ability to design and deliver engaging, project-based lessons that encourage creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration.
- Clear and patient communication skills, including the ability to give constructive feedback and motivate learners in a classroom setting.
- Comfort working in office in Brampton, ON, with the ability to manage small groups, maintain classroom order, and ensure learner safety.
- Background in computer science, software development, engineering, education, or a related field; post-secondary coursework or degree is an asset.
- Experience with additional languages or tools (e.g., Scratch, JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Java, C++, robotics platforms) is considered beneficial.
