Position Title: Communications Officer

Pay Scale Group: USW Pay Band 11

Department: Communications

Salary: $72,869 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $93,189

Type of Appointment: Term - (1 year)

Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday to Friday. Occasionally may be required to support with events that take place during the evenings or weekends.

Purpose

Under the direction of the Director of Communications, the incumbent will generate compelling story packages across Victoria University’s channels including web, social media, e-newsletters and print publications with a robust focus on supporting Alumni Affairs and Advancement objectives.

The Communications Officer will take a digital-first approach to creating content that celebrates the accomplishments of students, faculty staff, librarians and alumni. Along with superb writing skills, the Communications Officer will also use visual storytelling tools such as basic photography, graphic design and phone video skills to engage our community in compelling and relevant stories.

Through strong relationships across campus, the Content Officer will seek out stories and collaborate with other Victoria University staff to celebrate the accomplishments of the Victoria University community.

Duties:

Writing and Editing Content

- Working closely with the Director,



Communications and Marketing to develop story ideas and other content, including visual materials, for:
- Vic Report (the university’s print magazine), Vic Visionaries (the magazine for donors) and EC News (for the Emmanuel College community)
- Inside Victoria: an e-newsletter for staff, faculty and librarians, and alumni e-newsletters Vic Express and EC Connects

- The news section of the website
- Creates social media posts with visually compelling assets, working closely with the Digital Content Communications Officer
- Researches story ideas and interviews subject matter experts throughout the university to produce compelling content for the above channels
- Assists with the design, production and proofreading of communications products including stewardship reports and advancement proposals.

Sourcing and Creating Visual Assets

- Creates compelling visuals with graphics, text or photography to support written stories/posts utilizing basic software knowledge
- Sources photographs to support written stories and social media posts
- Shoots iPhone photos or videos to support storytelling
- Basic editing to adhere to channel requirements

Communications support

- Develops copy for invitations, web updates, staff emails and other communications materials
- Contributes to shared editorial calendar
- Shares content with other units across Victoria campus
- Liaises with U of T colleagues to place Victoria University stories in U of T publications.

Other Duties





- Ensures university-wide adherence to the university’s style guide, ensuring high-quality and error-free copy
- Ensures that the Victoria brand is supported across the university
- Supports photography and video for various events
- Collaborates with key internal staff around Victoria University to share existing content and to put forward new content ideas
- Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications Required:

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or other relevant area

Experience:

At least four (4) years of experience in the field of journalism or communications

Strong writing and editing skills, including solid knowledge of Canadian Press style

Demonstrated ability to generate compelling stories that inspire high engagement across multiple channels

Ability to build and sustain strong relationships with staff, students, faculty, librarians and alumni from a diverse background

Strong organizational, research, fact-checking, interviewing and project management skills.

Basic phone photography, video and editing skills

Basic graphic design skills to support visual storytelling such as Canva or Adobe software

(Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator)

Demonstrated judgment and initiative

Time management skills (multi-tasks to meet tight deadlines) and ability to work independently

Demonstrated ability to adhere to high level of ethical and privacy standards
