Mississauga

We're looking for an experienced, highly reliable Finance Operations Lead / Controller to own and continuously improve the finance function of a growing global business.

This is not a bookkeeping role, and it is not a strategic CFO role.

We need someone who operates in the middle: understands the complete financial cycle, ensures the numbers are reliable, reviews and guides the work of finance administrators and bookkeepers, identifies risks before management has to ask, improves processes and controls, supports finance operations across multiple countries and entities, and uses AI, automation, and lightweight internal tools to make the finance organization more accurate, scalable, and efficient.

A CPA license is required. CA, ACCA, or CMA is also valued.

The most important qualities for this role are reliability, trust, maturity, ownership, and financial judgment. We're looking for someone who can be trusted to look after the finance operation, recognize when something doesn't make sense, ask the right questions, and follow issues through to resolution. AI and automation experience matters, but it does not replace strong finance fundamentals.

WHAT YOU WILL OWN

Financial Operations & Control

You'll oversee the finance operating cycle: month-end close, P&L; and balance-sheet review, reconciliations, AR, AP, billing, cash management, 13-week cash-flow forecasting, journal-entry review, accruals, budgeting and variance analysis, controls, management reporting, audit/year-end support, and coordination with external accountants, tax specialists, and advisors. You should be comfortable across the whole finance function, not one area.

Global Finance Operations

Our business operates across multiple markets. You don't need to be an expert in every country's tax, legal, or accounting rules — but you need enough maturity to recognize a tax, compliance, cross-border, cash-flow, control, or reporting issues. You should be comfortable saying, "I don't yet have enough information to approve this — here are the questions we need answered, and where we may need specialist advice." We value that judgment far more than pretending to know every answer.

Leadership & Ownership

You'll supervise and develop finance administrators and bookkeepers — reviewing their work, setting clear procedures and controls, coaching team members, and ensuring important activities happen without management chasing them. We want someone who takes responsibility for outcomes, not just task completion: if something looks wrong, you investigate; if unclear, you ask; if a process keeps failing, you fix it; if management missed a risk, you raise it.

AI, Automation & Finance Systems A major part of this role is helping us build a more modern finance operation. We want someone already using tools such as Claude, Claude Projects, Claude Code, ChatGPT, automation platforms, APIs, advanced spreadsheets, scripts, and no-code/low-code tools. You don't need to be a software engineer — just comfortable using technology and AI to solve operational problems.

Examples of what we want to build: automated finance reviews, exception-based reconciliation workflows, AR aging and collection prioritization, automated billing checks, cash-flow monitoring, expense anomaly detection, close checklists, balance-sheet review workflows, AI-assisted investigation of unusual transactions, finance knowledge bases, and internal dashboards.

The objective isn't to automate judgment away — it's to automate repetitive work and surface exceptions and risks faster.

How We Think About AI

We want someone who understands what can safely be automated versus what still needs human judgment. AI may analyze transactions, compare reports, flag anomalies, prepare summaries, and prioritize exceptions — but accounting decisions and money movement still require human review. You should naturally think about accuracy, auditability, controls, and documentation when designing AI-enabled finance processes.

WHAT WE CARE ABOUT MOST

1. Reliability — if you say something will be done, it gets done. Management shouldn't have to repeatedly follow up.
2. Trust & Integrity — you'll have visibility into highly sensitive financial information, and we need mature judgment and a strong sense of professional responsibility.
3. Financial Judgment — you notice when the numbers don't make sense, you know what questions to ask, and you understand that a report generating successfully doesn't mean it's correct.
4. Ownership — you follow problems through to resolution instead of simply handing them off.
5. Critical Thinking — you challenge assumptions respectfully and are comfortable telling management when something needs further investigation.
6. Curiosity & Learning — you actively learn recent systems, technologies, and ways of working.
7. Process Improvement — you naturally look at repetitive or error-prone processes and ask, "can we design this better?"

EXPERIENCE WE'RE LOOKING FOR Ideally, you have 7+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience, including experience as a Financial Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, Finance Manager, Finance Operations Lead, or similar;

experience owning or substantially managing month-end close; a strong understanding of financial statements; balance-sheet reconciliation and cash-flow forecasting experience; AP/AR oversight; budgeting and variance analysis;

experience reviewing others' accounting work and mentoring finance staff; strong Excel/Google Sheets skills;

experience with QuickBooks, Xero, NetSuite, or similar; robust skilled English; and experience working with North American or international businesses.

Experience supporting multiple entities, countries, or currencies is strongly preferred.

AI / Automation Experience

We'd particularly like to meet candidates who can demonstrate something they've actually built — for example, a Claude Project used as a finance knowledge/analysis system, an automated reporting process, a reconciliation tool, an AI-assisted AR/collections process, a financial dashboard, or a process that substantially reduced manual finance work. Simply saying "I use ChatGPT" isn't what we're looking for — we want to know what problem you identified, what you built, and what changed as a result.

LOCATION & SCHEDULE

We're particularly interested in candidates based in LATAM, because strong overlap with the Toronto / Eastern North American workday is important.

Candidates elsewhere may still be considered if they can provide substantial working-hour overlap.

COMPENSATION

Depending on experience, financial judgment, leadership capability, and ability to improve systems. We may consider a part time or trial-basis start arrangement.

HIRING PROCESS

We intend to move quickly but evaluate carefully: application review, a short screening interview, a financial judgment interview, a paid practical assessment, a final discussion, and reference checks.

Practical Assessment

Finalists will receive a fictional company's financial and operational information — P&L;, balance sheet, general ledger, bank reconciliations, AP/AR aging, payroll, budget, cash-flow forecast, and prior-period results. You'll be asked to identify problems, risks, unusual trends, and missing information; the questions you'd ask; what you'd investigate; and what you'd require before approving the reporting. There will also be a process-improvement/AI exercise: we may provide a manual finance workflow and ask how you'd redesign it using better processes, automation, and AI.

We care about how you think, not simply whether you find every planted error.

TO APPLY

Please answer the following questions:

1. Finance Ownership — What is the most significant finance operation you've personally owned or managed? Please explain your responsibilities, company size, and team size.
2. Financial Judgment — Tell us about a financial number, report, or assumption that looked reasonable but that you challenged. What made you question it, and what did you discover?
3. Reliability — Tell us about a finance process or responsibility where other people depended on you every week or every month. How did you make sure it was completed accurately and on time?
4. Month-End — A bookkeeper tells you the month is closed. What do you personally review before telling the CEO the financial statements are reliable?
5. Cash Flow — What are the most important judgment-based assumptions in a 13-week cash-flow forecast?
6. Global Operations — Tell us about your experience supporting companies operating across multiple countries, entities, or currencies.
7. AI / Automation — Describe one finance process you personally automated or substantially redesigned. What existed before? What did you build? Which tools did you use? What changed afterward?
8. AI Tools — What have you built using Claude, Claude Projects, Claude Code, ChatGPT, AI coding tools, APIs, scripts, Zapier/Make, or similar technologies? Please be specific.
9. Controls — What finance activities would you not fully automate using AI, and why?
10. Process Design — Imagine five finance administrators spend several hours every Monday manually collecting reports, updating spreadsheets, reviewing customer balances, and identifying issues. How would you approach improving that process?
11. Management Challenge — Tell us about a time you disagreed with a CEO, CFO, or senior manager about a financial issue. What did you do?
12. Practical Details — Please provide your current location; current working hours/time zone; desired monthly compensation in USD; earliest available start date; LinkedIn profile, if available; and any examples, screenshots, or descriptions of finance tools or automations you've built.
