LABORATORY INSTRUCTOR (BAND LEVEL 9)

School of Human Kinetics and Recreation

(Contractual Sessional Position to April 30, 2027)

This competition may be used to fill identical positions in this unit within three (3) months of the closing date

DUTIES The Laboratory Instructor will be responsible for instructing students and preparing undergraduate laboratory classes in the School of Human Kinetics and Recreation. Duties include working with the course instructor to design and prepare labs; instructing and assisting students in practical techniques during the labs; marking and grading lab reports; designing lab exercises in collaboration with other laboratory instructors and faculty members; supervising student assistants; assisting students outside of formal laboratory periods and providing remedial help; supervising tests and other evaluations; assisting with research-related activities of faculty, graduate and undergraduate students; assuring awareness of, adherence to, and appropriate training in laboratory policies and procedures, emergency action plans, and updating safety guidelines and emergency response plans as needed; being responsible for inventory control and the gathering of fixed asset information; maintaining, setting up, and calibrating research equipment; and performing other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Experience (3-5 years)



in conducting or facilitating learning in an HKR laboratory environment; graduation from a Master’s in Kinesiology program is required; or an equivalent combination of experience and training may be considered. Expertise in the areas of human anatomy, human physiology, biomechanics, motor learning, and fitness leadership is essential. The ideal candidate will have considerable knowledge in the areas of instruction, assessment, and supporting student learning, as well as the ability to operate and maintain laboratory settings.

The successful applicant must be able to work independently as well in a team setting, be an effective problem solver, and be able to guide and provide effective feedback to students. Knowledge of the University’s Physical Education and Recreation degree programs, experience teaching in the areas of human anatomy, human physiology, biomechanics, motor learning, and fitness leadership, and a Clinical Exercise Physiologist designation from the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology would be considered assets.

SALARY $69,214 - $81,193 per annum (CUPE Local 1615)
