A rare setting, a real role
We're looking for a dependable, hands-on couple to become the caretaking team for a nearly 700-acre private family property near Horseshoe Valley, north of Barrie – Rolling hills, forests and fields laced with trails, barns and outbuildings, and a genuinely beautiful place to call home. You'll live as sole occupants of a very nice, private 3-bedroom house on the property at a significantly reduced rent, with a high degree of autonomy and the satisfaction of being key to keeping a special place running well.
This is a role for a couple who takes pride in doing things properly – indoors and out – and who would rather run their own show on 700 acres than punch a clock in town.
Compensation Package
We've structured this as two individual roles with individual pay, plus a set of shared benefits tied to the position:
Outdoor / Grounds & Equipment role: $28–$32/hour, based on experience
Indoor / Household role: $23–$26/hour, based on experience
Housing: Private, fully separate 3-bedroom home on the property, offered at a subsidized rent of $1,400/month against a market rate of approximately $3,500/month — an annual value of roughly $25,200.
Utilities allowance: $200/month toward electricity ($2,400/year).
WSIB coverage provided.
Vacation and statutory holidays per the Ontario Employment Standards Act. We ask that vacation generally be scheduled during the property's shoulder seasons (April, and late October through November) to align with the quieter periods in the property's annual cycle.
After-hours and outside-normal-hours work: As the only on-site team on a 700-acre property,
this role includes work that falls outside a typical daytime schedule – not just emergencies, but time-sensitive property needs that don't wait for business hours: for example, snow clearing after storms, bringing in hay when weather conditions are right, checking on animals, or responding to whatever the property or the weather demands on a given day. This is a normal and expected part of the role, not an exception to it. All such hours are tracked and paid at the applicable hourly rate – this is not folded into base pay.
Travel to other properties: From time to time, duties will take you to other properties and associated buildings we own. Where appropriate, we'll arrange transportation directly; where you use your own vehicle, mileage is reimbursed at the prevailing CRA automobile allowance rate.
The Role
Between the two of you, you'll take full ownership of both the household and the land:
Indoors: Housekeeping across the main residence and outbuildings, laundry and linens, grocery shopping and meal prep, errands, help with pet care, and general household support.
Outdoors: Groundskeeping, mowing, gardening, brush clearing, bushhogging fields and trails, trail maintenance and creation, fencing and infrastructure upkeep, feeding and handling horses, snow clearing, vehicle care,
and safe operation and diligent maintenance of tractors and implements, zero-turn mowers, skid steers and attachments, spray equipment, chainsaws, and other power equipment.
We're especially looking for people who don't wait to be told what needs doing — who walk the property, notice what's coming (a fence line sagging, a trail washing out, equipment due for service) and bring us a sensible plan to deal with it.
Required — Outdoor Role
- Significant hands-on experience operating and maintaining tractors/implements, skid steers/attachments, spray equipment, chainsaws and other gas power equipment
- Substantial prior experience working land, farms, and forests
- Carpentry/fencing and mechanical repair. Hydraulics and electrical experience solid assets
- Experience working compassionately with horses is a strong asset
Required — Both
- Impeccable honesty, integrity, discretion, and reliability
- Practical, self-directed, conscientious, and take pride in doing things well
- Genuine kindness toward animals, farm and domestic
- Physical strength, health, and stamina for outdoor work in all seasons
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
- Comfortable living and working semi-independently in a rural setting
Applicants must already be legally entitled to work in Canada without visa sponsorship.
