Part-Time Morning Support Worker – Child with Autism

Location: Ladner, BC

Schedule: 2–3 mornings per week during the school year

Compensation: $30–$35 per morning, depending on experience

We are seeking a reliable, patient and compassionate individual to provide morning support for an 8-year-old autistic child and transportation to her elementary school in the Ladner area.

This position is approximately 1–1.25 hours per morning, beginning at 7:45am and ending with school drop-off at approximately 9:00am. Days will vary based on our family's work schedule, with an anticipated need of 2–3 mornings per week. A schedule for the upcoming month will generally be provided approximately one week before the beginning of each month.

About the Role The successful candidate will arrive at our home at approximately 7:45am and support our child through the remainder of her morning routine. Lunch, school uniform and other school necessities will generally be prepared by the family in advance, though your assistance may be requested from time-to-time.

Responsibilities may include

- Assisting with dressing and basic grooming/hair
- Assisting with basic hygiene (hand washing, brushing teeth)
- Preparing a simple breakfast when required
- Supporting transitions and providing age-appropriate supervision
- Gathering her school belongings and backpack
- Driving her to school for approximately 9:00am
- Briefly communicating with her Educational Assistant at drop-off regarding how her morning went

She is partially verbal and has a limited spoken vocabulary. She is a very sweet, playful child who generally enjoys going to school and does particularly well with people who take the time to play and engage with her. Like many autistic children, she can have difficulty with transitions and may become dysregulated or experience meltdowns. When significantly upset, she may engage in self-injurious behaviour such as hitting herself and, less frequently, may push or slap another person.



These behaviours have become increasingly manageable as she has gotten older, and her meltdowns are generally becoming shorter and easier to prevent or de-escalate.

The successful candidate will be provided with information about her routines, triggers, communication and strategies that work well for her.

Qualifications & Requirements

Applicants must

- Have a valid driver's licence and satisfactory driver's abstract
- Have access to a safe and reliable vehicle for school transportation
- Hold valid First Aid/CPR certification
- Be willing to provide a current Criminal Record Check/Vulnerable Sector Check
- Provide a minimum of two references
- Be dependable and able to commit to scheduled mornings throughout the school year

Previous experience supporting autistic children, children with disabilities or other neurodivergent children is strongly preferred. Education or qualified experience in special education, child and youth care, behavioural intervention, education assistance, social services or a related field would be considered an asset.

Compensation

Compensation will be a flat rate of $30–$35 per morning, depending on experience and qualifications.

A flat rate is being offered rather than an hourly wage because the amount of support required may vary slightly from morning to morning. Some mornings may take less than the anticipated time, while occasionally a difficult transition may make the routine take a little longer. The selected individual will receive the agreed-upon full morning rate regardless of whether the routine is completed early.
