Hiring Unit: Steinberg Centre for Simulation and Interactive Learning (SCSIL)
The Surgical Performance Enhancement and Robotics (SuPER) Centre in collaboration with Steinberg Centre for Simulation and Interactive Learning (SCSIL) is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher with training in computer science, artificial intelligence, biomedical engineering, or a closely related field to join an interdisciplinary research project at the intersection of spatial computing, AI, and surgical education.
This one-year position will focus on the research on next-generation educational technologies for self-paced training in life-saving clinical skills in no-connectivity scenarios, with an initial emphasis on ATLS-related training and performance assessment. The successful candidate will contribute to the research, design and implementation of an immersive training tool that leverage spatial computing, computer vision, and on-device AI to support automated feedback, skill evaluation, and scalable surgical and trauma education. The project will involve software development for Apple Vision Pro using Swift and the Apple spatial computing ecosystem, as well as the development and deployment of edge AI models for automated performance assessment.
The fellow will work on integrating multimodal sensing, computer vision, and educational intelligence into immersive training workflows that can assess learner actions, provide objective feedback, and enable independent practice outside conventional instructor-led settings and without audio/video/data connectivity. The selected candidate will join a collaborative environment involving expertise in surgery, robotics, mixed reality, and AI. This is an opportunity to contribute to a high-impact translational project with strong relevance to medical education, simulation, and the future of digital training in healthcare.
Key Responsibilities
- Research and development of spatial computing-based educational applications on Apple Vision Pro
- Develop computer vision and AI pipelines for automated assessment of procedural and technical performance
- Implement and optimize on-device and edge AI solutions for real-time or near-real-time inference
- Work closely with clinical and technical collaborators to translate educational needs into deployable digital solutions
- Participate in manuscript preparation, grant development, technical documentation, and research dissemination
Required Qualifications
- PhD in computer science, artificial intelligence, biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, software engineering, or a related field
- Strong background in AI and software development, particularly in computer vision or machine learning
- Experience with Swift development and/or strong willingness to work within the Apple development ecosystem
- Experience in edge AI, model optimization, or deployment of AI models on-device
- Strong programming skills and experience building robust research or product-grade software
- Ability to work independently in an interdisciplinary research environment
- Solid written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Android and or Apple Vision Pro, visionOS, ARKit, RealityKit, or related spatial computing frameworks
- Experience in multimodal sensing, gesture or motion analysis, human action recognition, or educational assessment systems
- Familiarity with surgical simulation, medical education, digital health, or healthcare AI applications
- Experience deploying lightweight models for real-time inference on edge hardware
- Interest in translational research and building systems with real-world clinical and educational impact
