Job Objective:
The Settlement Worker in Schools (SWIS) supports newcomer children, youth, and families in their settlement and integration journey by providing client-centered, strengths-based services in schools and the community.
The role focuses on needs and assets assessment, settlement planning, service coordination, referrals, advocacy, information sharing, and community engagement to support successful integration, well-being, and client self-sufficiency.
Key Responsibilities:
Client Management
- Support client intake, sign-ups, referrals, and service initiation processes
- Conduct needs and assets assessments with newcomer children, youth, and families
- Provide settlement information, orientation, referrals, and navigation support
- Build trusting relationships with clients using strength-based and culturally responsive approaches
- Facilitate communication between clients, schools, and community stakeholders
- Conduct follow-up meetings to assess client progress and provide additional support
- Advocate professionally and ethically for clients when appropriate
- Support clients toward increased independence and self-efficacy
Data, Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain accurate and timely client records and service documentation
- Complete service entries and reporting in OCMS and other reporting systems.
- Prepare monthly reports and other required documentation.
- Submit mileage, expense claims,
and supporting documents on time.
- Ensure confidentiality and safe management of client information.
- Maintain accurate calendar entries that identify client work, program work, meetings, travel, administrative tasks, and reporting activities.
- Include client identifier and task details in calendar entries as required.
Stakeholder & Community Engagement
- Build and maintain positive relationships with schools and community partners
- Promote CBFY programs and services within schools and the broader community
- Participate in collaborative meetings and community initiatives
- Increase awareness of newcomer needs, barriers, and contributions within the community
- Representing CBFY professionally in external meetings and engagements
- Participate in team meetings, committees, and agency initiatives
- Share resources, information, and best practices within and across clusters
- Maintain open and professional communication with colleagues and leadership
Program Delivery
- Collaboratively plan, coordinate, and deliver CBFY workshops and youth afterschool/lunchtime programs in schools and communities
- Develop and share culturally relevant educational and recreational resources/referrals
- Provide language support to clients and other programs as needed
- Participating in mandatory and optional professional development opportunities
- Engage positively in coaching and feedback discussions with Team Leader/management
- Demonstrate continuous learning and application of new knowledge and skills including client management system documentation
- Stay informed about settlement trends, immigration status implications, community resources, and newcomer issues in the sector
Outcome Settlement Planning
- Review of youth client goals, needs, barriers, and strengths identified during intake and update as needed collaboratively with clients and families
- Review client needs/goals with NNESST Team and Team Leader to assess complexity/demands on CBFY resources
- Develop individualized educational settlement plans with clients, document in client management system and monitor progress
- Review and update educational settlement plans, documenting progress toward goals based on evolving client needs, and record in client management system
- Adjust internal/external referrals, interventions, and supports as required to support client outcomes

Qualifications & Requirements
- Post-secondary degree or diploma in Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, Education, International Relations, or a related discipline.
- 2–3 years of related work experience, preferably in settlement, social services, education, community services, or a similar environment.
- Advanced written and spoken English language skills.
- Second language is an asset, Mandarin language desired.
- Strong strengths-based and client-centered approach to service delivery.
- Demonstrated ability to work with immigrant and newcomer families from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds using culturally responsive practices.
- Knowledge and understanding of the settlement sector and issues related to newcomer adjustment, transition, and integration in Canada.
- Ability to work independently, take initiative, manage competing priorities, and contribute effectively within a team environment.
- Experience and strong working knowledge of Microsoft 365 applications and client management systems.
- Strong documentation, organizational, and time-management skills.
- Flexibility to work evenings and weekends when required.
