Del Van Gorder School is situated within the ancestral lands of the KaskaDena Nation and the traditional territory of the Ross River Dena Council. Teacher on calls replace regular classroom teachers or education assistants on an as needed basis. They are responsible for delivering set lesson plans, maintaining the positive learning climate of the school, managing students and expectations in the classroom and broader learning environments,
and collaborating with other educators as needed to ensure the success of the students in their class. Supervising students during recess/lunch breaks as well as participating in arrival and dismissal duties may also be part of the daily responsibilities.
Qualifications and Experience:
High School Diploma
Experience working with children in a school or childcare setting
Bachelor of Education (Elementary, Middle or Secondary) degree, or equivalent training would be an asset
A valid Teacher Regulation Branch Certificate, or in progress would be an asset
Desired Knowledge, Skills and Suitability:
Ability to understand and effectively carry out general oral and written instructions with a minimum of supervision
Ability to communicate effectively using courtesy and tact in the explanation and exchange of information
Ability to determine, judge and select appropriate course of action within limits of established methods and procedures
A proven ability to develop a positive learning environment in the classroom and evidence of strong organization and classroom management skills
Knowledge of and sensitivity to the culture and aspirations of Yukon First Nations students as well as a culturally diverse student population
Successful experience integrating local Indigenous culture and traditions into curriculum, or familiarity with and understanding of local Indigenous culture and commitment to integrate it into the curriculum
Successful experience working collaboratively with rural school communities, Yukon First Nations and local partners to support student learning and foster positive relationships.
