Position Title: Emergency Veterinarian Reports to: Director of Emergency Department: Emergency Status: Full-time Permanent (40 hours per week)

Overview:
Are you a dedicated Emergency Veterinarian looking to join a progressive, multi-specialty team in a supportive and modern hospital? Boreal Veterinary Centre in Edmonton, Alberta is seeking an experienced and compassionate Emergency Veterinarian to join our growing 24-hour Emergency Department.

Our state-of-the-art, privately owned hospital features advanced diagnostics and treatment capabilities including CT, ultrasound, endoscopy, fluoroscopy, in-house laboratory services, and 24-hour RVT support.

You'll work alongside specialists in Critical Care, Surgery, Internal Medicine, Anesthesiology, Cardiology, and Oncology, allowing for seamless case collaboration and a supportive, well-rounded medical environment.

About the Opportunity
Boreal Veterinary Centre's Emergency Department is continuing to grow, and we are seeking two (2) Emergency Veterinarians (DVMs) to join our team. These positions will support our expanding caseload and help us continue delivering exceptional patient care, outstanding client service, and collaborative veterinary medicine in a fast-paced emergency environment.

This position follows a rotating schedule consisting of 8 to 10-hour shifts, including days, afternoons, evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays.

Position Summary:
As an Emergency Veterinarian at Boreal, you will provide high-quality medical care to both hospitalized and outpatient emergency cases. You will play a key role in stabilizing critical patients, developing treatment plans,



and communicating with clients and referring veterinarians to ensure the best possible outcomes.

What We’re Looking For:
We are seeking a candidate with:

A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree or equivalent from an accredited institution

Successful completion of the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE) or equivalent

A current license (or eligibility) to practice in Alberta

Strong clinical and diagnostic skills with a focus on patient-centered care

Excellent communication skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure

A team-oriented mindset with a commitment to collaboration and continued learning

Experience in emergency or critical care settings is preferred, but mentorship and onboarding support are available for veterinarians eager to advance their skills in emergency medicine.

Responsibilities
The job description below lists the principal responsibilities of the position but is not all-encompassing. Responsibilities of an Emergency Veterinarian at Boreal Veterinary Centre include:

Care for hospitalized patients under the care of the emergency department.

See outpatients presenting to the emergency department for care.

Perform physical examinations on patients of the emergency department.

Communicate with referring veterinarians to facilitate transfer of cases to the emergency department.





Create estimates for costs of treatment for inpatient and outpatient cases.

Communicate costs of treatment to owners and present options for care.

Create treatment orders for inpatient and outpatient cases.

Interpret diagnostic tests including bloodwork, urinalysis and radiographs.

Communicate with owners regarding resuscitation status prior to admission to the hospital.

Communicate risks of treatments and diagnostics with owners.

Establish a veterinary patient client relationship and gain informed consent prior to treatment.

Maintain a basic knowledge of cases in the hospital under your care during following rounds to allow for intervention if emergencies arise.

Maintain up to date medical records.

Communicate with owners regarding changes to medical status or prognosis.

Provide effective rounds to facilitate transfer of cases between veterinarians.

Update owners regarding finances as the responsible veterinarian and establish consent for ongoing care prior to the end of your shift if at the end of the estimate.

Complete discharge notes prior to patients leaving the hospital.

Work a variety of shifts to allow for 24 hour coverage.

Other tasks as may be reasonably requested by the employer
