Job Description:
Reporting to the Assistant Dean, Faculty ofScience and Technology, the Animal Health Laboratory Technician assiststeachers in the preparation, presentation, supervision, and evaluation of laboratorywork.
More specifically, but not limited to, the Animal Health Laboratory Technician:
- Operates, supervises, and ensures the maintenance of the Animal HealthTechnology (AHT) laboratories – both on-campus and off-campus, atpartner facilities;
- Sets uplaboratory equipment and prepares laboratories, in collaboration with theteachers;
- Collectsspecimens;
- Demonstrates,monitors, instructs, and evaluates the students;
- Cares for allanimals used in the laboratories according to guidelines and standards, such asthe Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC);
- Providesguidance to students for the care of animals and the maintenance of the AHTfacilities;
- Organizes,trains, and supervises students for ‘Duty Week’ and other AHT activities;
- Trains andsupervises student employees and ensures administrative tasks are completed forhiring and payment;
- Assists with theselection of equipment and ensures its proper use;
- Calibrates andmaintains equipment, lab tools,
and other teaching aids and arranges forrepairs and maintenance;
- Maintains andupdates inventory and prepares purchase, work order, and other requisitions;
- Liaises withother college departments and external suppliers;
- Demonstrates andensures that health and safety practices are maintained in the laboratories andanimal facilities;
- Arranges foranimals to be available for student interactions and interventions;
- Maintains clientrecords and files and processes payments for the Animal Health TechnologyPedagogical Clinic;
- Works collaboratively with otherLaboratory Technicians and helps supervise and train less experiencedpersonnel;
- Participates in departmentaland college committees and activities;
- Coordinates the Vanier College Animal CareCommittee (ACC):
- o Preparesagendas and minutes for ACC meetings and chairs meetings;
- oFollows up on ACC activities;
- oEnsures all documentation is properlyprepared, distributed, and maintained;
- oPrepares Animal Use Data Forms for review byACC and Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC);
- oCorresponds with theCanadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA), maintains andmonitors requirements, and prepares documentation;
- oCoordinates the preparation of protocols foranimal use for ACC and monitors the post-approval of protocols;
- oCoordinates site visits of the CCAC;
- oPrepares the pre-assessment and follow-updocumentation for site visits of the CCAC;
- oUpdates Terms of Reference form, as needed.
