Salary: $147,700 to $225,100 annuallyFTE: 1.0, 35 hours per weekCompetition Close Date: Sunday, May 3, 2026 @ 11:59 PMWhat does this role look like?Reporting to the General Counsel, the purpose of this job is to provide legal advice and support to all levels of the CBE including identifying and analyzing legal issues, drafting key documents, presenting transparent recommendations, and assuring compliance with relevant legislation.This job is accountable for:Providing legal advice for a broad range of legal areas including education law, privacy law, torts, contracts, family law, employment and labour law, construction law, commercial leasing, intellectual property, insurance law, administrative law and general litigation (and such other areas as may arise).Working closely with CBE service units and schools to identify, assess and evaluate legal outcomes of major decisions impacting the organization and to write legal opinions and memos which may require extensive research of statutes and regulations.What will you do?Provide legal advice to service units and school in a timely and responsive manner.Gather required information, research legislation and case law, and prepare reports, opinions, memos, and legal documents.Liaise with external counsel and CBE service units to manage the CBE’s participation in litigation involving the CBE.Act as liaison, as requested by General Counsel,



with the public and outside agencies on legal matters concerning the CBE.Provide legal advice to support the work of CBE Human Resources regarding workforce legal issues.Provide legal advice to support the work of the CBE Access to Information and Privacy Coordinator to ensure adherence to Access to Information Act and Protection of Privacy Act.Respond to legal processes and represent the organization’s position, as directed by General Counsel, in litigation and administrative law processes.Provide legal review of policies and procedures.Draft and review sensitive correspondence content for potential political/reputational ramifications.Perform other related responsibilities as assigned to meet organizational goals and objectives.What are we looking for?Required Education and ExperienceLaw or Juris Doctor degree.Qualified to practice law in Alberta.At least five years experience in at least three of the following areas of law: labour law, employment law, human rights law, family law, civil litigation, privacy law, commercial law.Familiarity with the Education Act and legislation relating to work of the Calgary Board of Education.Preferred Education and ExperienceExperience providing legal advice and support to a large public sector organization.Experience providing legal advice and support to an organization with a unionized workforce.Experience providing legal advice and support as in-house legal counsel.Demonstrated Skills and CompetenciesStrong interpersonal and analytical skills.Excellent oral and written communication skills; capable of communicating with a wide variety of audiences.Ability to work effectively in both team and independent settings.Ability to work cross-functionally.Demonstrated legal research skills.Proven ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and efficiently.Confidence to interact independently with all levels within and outside the Calgary Board of Education.Demonstrated professionalism and diplomacy in carrying out job responsibilities.#J-18808-Ljbffr
