Government Affairs and Public Policy Officer
Position Summary
The Government Affairs and Public Policy Officer is responsible for advancing NCCM’s government relations, advocacy, and community mobilization priorities.
Officers will build and maintain relationships with elected officials and political staff, monitor political developments, support advocacy campaigns, and mobilize NCCM members and community partners around priority issues.
The successful candidate will be comfortable operating in political environments, building relationships quickly, organizing people around clear objectives, and turning organizational strategy into concrete action.
The Officer will work closely under the Directors of GAPP and other NCCM teams to execute government relations and mobilization strategies across assigned jurisdictions and policy files.

Key Responsibilities
Government Relations
– Build and maintain relationships with MPs, MPPs/MLAs, municipal elected officials, political staff, government officials, and other relevant decision-makers.
– Request and coordinate meetings with elected officials and political staff.
– Prepare briefing materials, talking points, correspondence, meeting notes, and follow-up materials.
– Represent NCCM in meetings, consultations, receptions, roundtables, and other government engagement opportunities.
– Follow up on commitments made by government and political stakeholders.
– Maintain accurate records of government relationships, meetings, commitments, and next steps.
– Identify opportunities for NCCM to engage decision-makers on priority issues.
– Develop familiarity with the priorities, interests, and political dynamics of key decision-makers.
Community Mobilization
– Develop and execute mobilization strategies in support of NCCM campaigns and policy priorities.
– Build relationships with mosques, community organizations, student groups, professional associations, grassroots organizers, and other community stakeholders.
– Recruit and coordinate volunteers and community leaders around specific campaigns.
– Organize community meetings, advocacy events, development initiatives, delegation visits, town halls, letter-writing campaigns, calling campaigns, petition drives, and other mobilization activities.
– Develop clear calls to action that enable community members to participate effectively.
– Work with NCCM’s communications and organizing teams to translate policy priorities into compelling mobilization campaigns.
– Track participation and engagement across mobilization activities.
Advocacy Campaigns
– Support the planning and execution of NCCM’s federal, provincial, and municipal advocacy campaigns.
– Translate campaign strategies developed by GAPP leadership into concrete work plans.
– Coordinate government outreach, community mobilization, stakeholder engagement, and campaign follow-up.
– Support joint advocacy initiatives with partner organizations.
– Help secure political commitments and public statements in support of NCCM priorities.
– Track campaign deliverables, timelines, outcomes, and outstanding actions.
– Identify opportunities to increase political pressure, broaden coalition support, or strengthen community participation.
Coalition and Stakeholder Engagement
– Develop relationships with organizations and individuals who can advance NCCM’s advocacy objectives.
– Participate in coalitions and working groups relevant to NCCM’s priorities.
– Identify opportunities for joint letters, meetings, events, campaigns, and other collaborative initiatives.
– Coordinate with community partners to ensure advocacy efforts are aligned and mutually reinforcing.
– Maintain a strong network of community and civil society contacts.
Internal Coordination
– Work closely with the Directors of GAPP to execute departmental priorities.
– Coordinate with Legal, Communications, Education, Development, and other NCCM teams where campaigns overlap.
– Provide regular updates on government relationships, mobilization activities, political developments, and campaign progress.
– Ensure all relevant engagement and relationship information is documented and accessible to the broader GAPP team.
– Support senior leadership with preparation for important government and stakeholder meetings.
Qualifications
– 2–5 years of experience in government relations, political organizing, public policy, advocacy, community organizing, communications, or a related field.
– Strong understanding of Canadian politics and government institutions.
– Demonstrated ability to build relationships with elected officials, political staff, community leaders, or other stakeholders.
– Solid written and verbal communication skills.
– Strong organizational and project-management abilities.
– Ability to manage multiple files and deadlines simultaneously.
– Ability to work independently and exercise sound political judgment.
– Willingness to travel and work occasional evenings and weekends.
– Experience working with Muslim communities, nonprofit organizations, advocacy organizations, or grassroots campaigns is an asset.
– Additional language skill sets are an asset
