Somebody helped you figure it out.
Maybe it was a franchise coach when you were twenty-one and in over your head. Maybe a guy two years ahead of you who told you what was wrong with your pricing. Whoever it was, you remember the conversation that changed the trajectory.
This job is being that person, for owners who don't have anyone.
We coach painting contractors — 1,200+ owners over five years, about 200 in the program today. This role is the very start of that journey: brand new to roughly $500K, still in the truck five days a week, no job costing, quoting off a number another painter handed them years ago. They took a real risk on themselves and right now they own a job instead of a business. One good quarter from something that changes their family's life, one bad winter from going back to working for somebody else.
That's the stage where a coach matters most. Taking a company from $5M to $10M is an interesting problem. Getting a guy paying himself properly, off the tools and home for dinner is a different order of impact — it compounds for the rest of his life, and his kids watch him do it. We hire for impact here, not for a paycheck. The economics are real and we'll be straight with you about them below.
You'd run our Basecamp cohorts for these owners. The job is to get visible results fast and early, because early results are what keep somebody in the game.
What you'd do
- Run cohorts of around six owners on a four-week cycle: weekly group calls — hot seats, topical training, working blocks — plus one on one coaching calls monthly.. and emergency 1 on 1's as needed.
- Be in your cohort's Slack daily. Not office hours. Daily.
- Onboard recent owners and get their numbers visible in week one: what a job actually costs, what they should charge, what they should pay themselves.
- Coach the ground game specifically — door knocking, yard signs, jobsite radius, neighbourhood blitzes, strategic partners, presenting an estimate in the living room instead of emailing a number and hoping.
- Drive early wins. First jobs sold at a price that makes money. A week that doesn't eat them alive.
- Work the identity shift, which is the whole thing: from a painter with a truck to an owner who runs a company.
- Bring referrals into the program. We'll train you and pay a full sales commission on anything you source.
- Shape our startup curriculum. We're building out our sub-$300K resources now and this seat helps write them.
Who this is for
You've started home-service businesses from nothing, more than once. You know the first winter, the first bad hire, the first month you couldn't pay yourself.
You've been close to painting — ideally in it.
You got yourself off the tools deliberately, and you remember exactly how. And you took at least one business past $1.5M and ran it profitably, 15%-20% net, 50% gross profit. Revenue alone doesn't qualify anyone here; plenty of people have run $2M badly.
You're positive with numbers — not "I had a bookkeeper." You can look at a $10,000 job and tell me the gross margin, then tell an owner why his price is wrong in a way that makes him change it.
You're hyper-organized, because cohorts don't work if calls move. And you do what it takes to get a result: sit with a panicking owner, cut through eleven problems to the one that matters this month, and get him moving before the call ends.
Requirements
- Started and ran a home-service business from zero. Painting strongly preferred; exteriors, cleaning, or similar counts.
- Scaled one past $1.5M and ran it profitably — around 20% net — and personally stopped working in the field while you still owned it.
- Can hold a real financial conversation without a spreadsheet: job costing, gross margin, overhead recovery, owner pay.
- Have personally done low cost ground-game marketing, and can teach it rather than just describe it.
- 30–40 hours a week as a 1099 contractor. US or Canada.
- A real remote setup: dedicated office, wired internet, working camera. A dropped call is a client's hour gone.
Nice to have — none of these are required
- Time in a franchise system that drills the ground game. College Pro, Student Works, Wow 1 Day Painting, Shack Shine, or another with real operator development behind it. The logo isn't the point — somebody made you knock doors and work a jobsite radius until you could do it in your sleep, then made you teach it. Several of our team came up that way.
- You've hired, trained and kept crews, and can teach an owner to do the same.
- You're comfortable with AI tools. We run an internal coaching platform and a client-facing app, and our coaches use both daily.
- You speak Spanish. We have a large group of Spanish-speaking owners and not enough coaches who can serve them well.
Compensation
Variable, performance-based, and we'll be straight about how it works.
- A percentage of your portfolio's monthly recurring revenue: 20% on Basecamp cohorts, 15% on one-to-one Summit clients.
- That percentage rises 5% for every year a client stays with you. Retention is worth real money here.
- A full additional 15% sales commission on any client you bring in yourself, on top of your coaching percentage. It's the biggest lever in the model and it's underused.
- Paid rates for community calls and onboarding sessions, plus referral bonuses on our bookkeeping partner.
- On-target earnings at a full portfolio: $130,000–$160,000 and up, depending on how many clients you source yourself.
How this builds. Onboarding runs about four weeks and is unpaid. First clients land around week four or five, then your portfolio fills in gradually — a cohort and a few owners at a time, as we match people to the right coach. We don't have fifty clients on a shelf waiting for someone to start. Expect four to five months to a full portfolio, and expect to earn your way into it. This is not a salaried seat and it is not zero to a hundred. If you need guaranteed income from day one, we'd rather you know that now than in month two.
How to apply
Send your resume and record a 2–3 minute video answering these three questions. We read every application; the video is what gets you a call.
- The business you built from zero — what it was, what it did at its best, and how you got yourself off the tools.
- A painter is at $300K, in the truck five days a week, with no idea which jobs make money. What are you doing in the first 30 days?
- What gross margin should a residential painting business run at, and how do you get an owner there?
Answer number three with actual numbers. It tells us the most.
This isn't for you if
- You've coached or consulted but never owned and run the business yourself.
- You need a salary and a benefits package.
- You'd want to bring your own curriculum. We have a methodology, our clients bought it, and coaches deliver it. There's a real path to shaping it — after you've run it.
- You can't commit to the same hour every week for six owners counting on it.
