Position Vacancy: Respiratory Therapy

Position : Part Time Anesthesia Assistant

Posting Period: Aug 20 – Aug 27, 2026

Hours of Work: NON UNION

Location: WRHN @ Chicopee (formerly Grand River Hospital, Freeport Campus)

Position Summary:

The Registered Respiratory Therapist-Anesthesia Assistant (RRT/AA) is part of the anesthesia care team at Waterloo Regional Health Network supporting anesthesia and perioperative services within the organization The RRT/AA

- Provides quality diagnostic and therapeutic services in accordance with policies, procedures, medical directives and physicians’ orders while assisting the Anesthesiologist with case preparation as follows: Pre-operative patient assessment; Pre-induction; IV insertion; Arterial line insertion; Endotracheal intubation; Assists with central line insertion; Assists with pulmonary artery catheter insertion, assist with regional anesthesia techniques
- Works in collaboration with and under the dilatation of anesthesia care model in conjunction with an Anesthesiologist or proceduralist
- Performs and/or assists with arterial punctures, blood sampling from arterial lines/PA lines
- Airway management and assistance with difficult intubations
- Prepares all necessary accessory lines and the set up of cardio-respiratory monitoring systems
- Administers pharmacological agents to patients (by inhalation or injection) under the direct supervision of the Anesthesiologist or as per medical directive.




- Administers blood products in accordance with recommendations set out by Canadian Blood Services
- Maintains hemodynamic measurements and recordings
- Performs ECG recordings as requested by Anesthesiologist
- Assists with the transfer and transportation of ventilated and monitored patients
- Responds to and assists with cardiovascular surgical emergencies and/or cardio-respiratory emergencies (including “any Anesthetist/Physician” calls)
- Maintains and calibrates anesthesia related equipment in the OR in collaboration with the Biomedical Department including but not limited to: anesthetic gas machines, ventilators, vapourizers, circuits, monitoring equipment, scavenging system, airway management equipment, bronchoscope, echocardiography equipment, nerve stimulators, fluid warmers, body warmers and medical gas delivery systems.
- Provides a high level of cardio-respiratory patient care during the patient’s pre, intra and post-operative phase

Position Requirements:

- Graduate of an accredited Respiratory Therapy program
- Current General Certificate of Registration with the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario (CRTO)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP)
- Minimum of three (3) years' critical care experience
- Successful completion of formal training as an Anesthesia Assistant (AA) and/or Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists CCAA designation or willingness to complete an accredited AA program within 18 months of hire
- Capable of making critical decisions, in collaboration with the Anesthesiologist, with appropriate responses
- Demonstrated the ability to function with confidence in emergencies
- Ability to work in a strong multidisciplinary team workplace.

- Demonstrated, and ongoing commitment to continuing education
