Term: Full-Time, Fixed-Term 6-Month Contract with possibility of extension

Location : Remote- This role is remote, and the candidate can be located anywhere in Canada.

Salary : The salary for this role is $68,215 per year.

Role Overview:

As Associate Director of Legal Services at Scouts Canada, this role plays a vital part in safeguarding the integrity and resilience of our movement—ensuring that we can continue to deliver safe, impactful experiences that help young people develop skills for life.

By managing a complex pipeline of legal claims, modelling associated financial risk, and coordinating with external legal counsel and insurers, the role ensures timely, informed responses to legal challenges. Through transparent, risk-focused reporting to senior leadership and the Board, the Associate Director helps the organization make sound, forward-looking decisions. They also maintain robust systems for legal records and collaborate across departments to embed legal risk awareness into planning and operations.

With responsibility for team leadership, governance support, and cross-functional partnership, this role ensures legal matters are handled with care, rigour, and alignment to the values that underpin Scouting in Canada.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Portfolio

· Claims Management: Operationalize strategies to manage an active pipeline of legal claims made against Scouts Canada, including coordinating case documentation, tracking claim status, liaising with external legal counsel on the appropriate handling of cases, and ensuring appropriate financial modelling of current and anticipated liabilities - ensuring responses are timely, risk-informed, and aligned with organizational values.

· Contract Management: Operationalize strategies to ensure contracts entered into by the organization are appropriate, approved and recorded.

· Risk Identification and Reporting: Operationalize strategies to identify matters of emerging or high risk (legal, reputational, or financial) and ensure timely escalation to senior leadership, with recommendations for action. Prepare clear, concise, and risk-oriented reports for the Executive Leadership Team and Board, summarizing legal exposure, financial implications, and trends in claim types and volumes.





· Insurance Coordination: Prepare, submit, and follow through on insurance claims related to legal matters, ensuring appropriate engagement with insurers and timely reimbursement where applicable.

· Collaboration: Work cross-functionally with other teams (e.g., Property, People, Safety, and Finance) to ensure legal risks are considered in organizational planning and incident response.

· Records and Archiving: Operationalize strategies to establish and oversee systems to archive and retrieve records (digital or physical) that may be relevant for current and future legal claims, and interrogate these records to support effective case management.

· Other duties: As assigned.

Leadership

- People: Continuously improve the performance of your staff, while ensuring a positive growth culture that results in increased satisfaction from high performing staff, and swiftly addresses performance concerns.
- Volunteers: Continuously improve partnerships between staff and National, Council and Property Society and level volunteers.
- Committees and Governance: Form excellent relationships with members of any relevant committees, providing clear and concise, evidence-based advice and guidance.
- Deputization: Deputize for your manager during absences.

Finance and Revenue:
- Budget: Effectively manage and report on <$1M team and project budgets.

Qualifications and Job-Specific Competencies:

- 5+ years related experience in one of the following areas; legal administration or insurance.
- 2+ years leading teams with a focus on operational strategy and delivery in similar sectors.
- Post-secondary qualification or equivalent combination of education and work experience in legal administration.

· Legal acumen: knowledge and familiarity with legal matters as it relates to insurance claims, processing legal claims, PIPEDA, AODA and provincial legislative requirements relating to accessibility and the ability to review contractual terms. · Record Management : Understanding of efficient record management as well as retention of records for historic legal matters.

· Technical Proficiency: Strong computer and technical skills and a growth-mindset when approaching new technology, including Proficient with Microsoft 365 / Office applications – specifically legal case management software.

· Data Manipulation:



Ability to interrogate data sets and visualize data to inform strategy, results and process improvements.

· Program Management: Ability to manage multiple projects, identifying risks and taking accountability for status

· Travel: Must hold a valid Canadian driver’s license or have equivalent ability to travel

Working Conditions:

· Works in an office environment

· Traditional working hours with some non-traditional working hours, including evenings and weekends, will be required

· Some overnight travel required.

· PRC (Police Record Check) and VSS (Vulnerable Sector Check) are required before the start date.

· Mandatory training requirement.

Physical Demands:

- Sitting at a computer for extended periods of time.
- Lifting of boxes/records.
