We are seeking an Associate Physician (AP) to join the Calgary Epilepsy Program. As an integral member of a highly specialized multidisciplinary team, the AP will support inpatient and outpatient epilepsy care within the Seizure Monitoring Unit (SMU) and epilepsy clinics.

Physicians are international medical graduates registered for supervised practice with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) under the Limited Practice Registry. Working under the direction of epileptologists and epilepsy surgeons, APs provide essential clinical support in the assessment, monitoring, and management of epilepsy patients. This role is ideal for internationally trained physicians seeking meaningful clinical practice within a structured and supportive environment. The AP will collaborate closely with epileptologists, epilepsy surgeons, nurses, EEG technologists, neuropsychologists, psychologists, psychiatrists, radiologists, and nuclear medicine specialists.

Responsibilities include conducting admissions, providing daily inpatient care, coordinating diagnostic testing, supporting discharge planning, and participating in outpatient clinics and multidisciplinary rounds.

Description

Associate Physicians in the Epilepsy Program work within a multidisciplinary team that includes epileptologists, epilepsy surgeons, nurses, EEG technologists, neuropsychologists, psychologists, psychiatrists, radiologists, and nuclear medicine specialists. In this role, the AP provides comprehensive clinical support across the Seizure Monitoring Unit (SMU), inpatient services, and outpatient epilepsy clinics. The AP is responsible for completing patient admissions by obtaining detailed histories, performing physical and neurological examinations, reviewing prior medical records, consenting patients for diagnostic tests, and documenting all admission information in the FileMaker database.

Admissions must be completed efficiently to support ongoing SMU workflow.



During a patient’s stay in the SMU, the AP participates in daily rounds, completes chart documentation, ensures patient‑reported outcome questionnaires are completed, and interacts with patients regularly to address clinical needs. The AP coordinates diagnostic investigations such as laboratory testing, MRI, PET, SPECT, and neuropsychological assessments, arranges consultations, adjusts antiseizure medications, accompanies patients to tests when required, and responds to nursing inquiries, escalating concerns to consultants as appropriate.

APs adhere to AHS Associate Physician Terms of Reference and participate in regular reviews with designated consultants. Day‑to‑day clinical activities are overseen by the consultant on call or clinic lead, while broader program responsibilities are overseen by the consultant responsible for the AP program.

Required Qualifications: Applicants must be eligible to work in Canada, including Canadian citizens, permanent residents,



or individuals holding valid open work permits. As required by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA), candidates must demonstrate English language proficiency, typically through the Academic IELTS examination with minimum scores of 7.0 in each component unless exempt under CPSA policy.

Candidates must hold a medical degree from a medical school outside Canada or the United States that is listed in the FAIMER International Medical Directory, and must have completed at least one full year of hands‑on, supervised postgraduate medical education outside Canada and the United States. Applicants must have successfully completed the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination Part I (MCCQE1) and must be eligible for registration under CPSA’s Limited Practice Registry for supervised practice.

Additional Required Qualifications: Candidates must submit a current Curriculum Vitae and an AHS Clinical Assistant/Associate Physician Eligibility Pre‑Screen Letter with their application. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

The successful applicant is responsible for maintaining licensure with the CPSA throughout employment. AHS requires all applicants to complete a pre‑screening process to confirm eligibility for CPSA registration; details are available on the AHS Medical Staff website. Applicants must demonstrate currency of practice within the last three years, either through independent practice, supervised regulated practice, or continuous postgraduate training for at least one year in the discipline.

Fellowship training, community service, public service, national service, Medical Officer roles, and general practice experience do not meet currency‑of‑practice requirements.

Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to applicants with recent experience in acute care settings, particularly those with neurology or epilepsy experience within the last three years.
