Location: 8 Moore Road, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia

Position Type: Permanent Full-Time

Reporting To: General Manager

Start Date: Immediately

Hours: Monday to Friday, 6:00am Start Time

Summary:

The District Operations Manager oversees all aspects of trucking and facilities operation, ensuring efficient processes and providing solid leadership to the team, and the overall sustainability of the district. The role focuses heavily on ensuring employee safety, optimizing productivity and efficiency, effectively managing resources, and finding opportunities for continuous improvement across all operations in Atlantic Canada to ensure profitability.

This role requires you to have very robust interpersonal and communication skills as well as the ability to lead a successful and effective team. Additionally, the role requires an individual that is capable of working with cross-functional group of professionals, bringing people together to achieve common goals and meet the strategic objectives for the district.

Responsibilities:

As a District Operations Manager, your duties will include but are not limited to:

- Improving ROI across the district will be a key priority.
- Ensuring standardization of process across the district and in line with the corporate objectives.
- Educate managers of the need to follow safe work practices and ensure there is culture of safety within the operation above all else.
- Work to develop consistency in all aspects of how the operations are managed in each site within Atlantic Canada. Best practices must be identified, codified into workflows, duplicated across sites, and then enforced and measured.
- Manage, through strong and effective leadership, operations managers, route supervisors, and other employees under your leadership.
- Lead the operations team in coordinating day-to-day business operations to improve efficiency and customer service.
- Provide strong leadership to your team of managers,



utilizing performance management tools to ensure goals are met and improved upon.
- Conduct regular check-ins with all managers and supervisors under your leadership, providing them opportunities to share concerns, successes, and learn from you.
- Foster a culture of accountability within your team by developing goals and empowering people to reach them. This will include ongoing tracking of productivity, developing and tracking effective KPIs, and completing various daily/weekly/monthly reports.
- Ensure that your team of managers is maintaining accurate employee files, administering coaching and progressive discipline, in coordination with the PCBP, and completing regular performance management check ins with employees.
- Be a main point of contact for key customers and department managers within the company.
- Assist the General Manager to develop annual budgets and work throughout the year to ensure they are met and measured against.
- You will create and maintain a culture of continuous improvement within your team of managers, working closely with them to ensure they understand what is expected, how to reach the appropriate goals, and provide the feedback required to enhance their growth.
- Work with other departments, including but not limited to maintenance & equipment, sales, accounting, and people & culture to build a team environment, contributing to overall operational success.
- Working with the District Controller, review monthly expenditures and ensure the operation is meeting corporate targets and provide the appropriate feedback for your managers.
- Using knowledge of each operation, work with the Regional Sales Manager to strategically gain commercial customers in strategic areas through offering innovative solutions and leveraging pricing advantages through route density.
- Work to understand each residential collection contract in the district to enable the offering of feedback on efficiency and better routing opportunities.
- Learn about the major customers in each location and work with the sales group to develop relationship with key players at those customers to ensure strong relationships and account retention.
- Manage labour costs with the management at each operation and work with the equipment team to help reduce equipment downtime.
- As required, be willing to travel to other locations within the company to facilitate training, standardization, and teamwork on a frequent basis.

Competencies & Qualifications:

- Must have strong interpersonal skills to manage, mentor, and guide personnel. Self-motivation and organization are required,



as well as the ability to develop effective communication and working relationships with all stakeholders.
- Strong financial acumen.
- Must be organized and able to implement procedures to maximize efficiency of processes.
- Must have a valid driver’s licence and maintain a respectable driving record.
- Must have advanced computer skills, including knowledge and experience with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, fleet software, and be able to learn new programs.
- Excellent communication and the ability to motivate employees and supervisors.
- Must be self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision.
- Experience in meeting deadlines with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and stressful conditions.
- It is a key focus to build relationships with maintenance, finance, and other operations staff to align the corporate goal of fostering teamwork and creating operational excellence.
- Must be a leader within the organization and work to build up your team of employees to perform at a high level.
- Must be able to work on holidays and/or weekends if required. Must also be able to work flexible hours as needed including early starts and late days to lead a team by example.
- Must have a thorough geographical understanding of the area you are responsible for managing.
- A valid Class 3/DZ driver’s licence is an asset as is experience in the waste industry.
- Ability to travel to other Miller Waste sites throughout Atlantic Canada as required.
- Regular travel throughout the district requiring many overnight stays.
