The Work The Building Survey Technician position is an entry-level, mobile role based in Calgary, requiring travel within your home province and other parts of Canada. Our team has completed projects in all provinces and the Yukon. Do not apply if you are not comfortable with traveling for up to three weeks a month.
In this role, you will:
- Take site measurements and record spatial and descriptive features of the built environment in AutoCAD.
- Record site and building information in spreadsheets/forms or construction data applications.
- Capture flat and 360 photographs.
- Work with laser scanning (lidar) tools to capture point cloud data.
This is a remote position, requiring you to take responsibility for your work products and enjoy working independently. You will also collaborate with team members both in person and from other remote locations.
The Candidate
Our Building Survey Technicians are more than just data collectors; they are the vital, front-line representatives of As-Built Measuring Services (ABMS). You are the public face of the company, embodying our commitment to accuracy, professionalism, and client service. Success in this role requires a dynamic blend of core competencies to navigate complex site environments and consistently deliver comprehensive, high-quality measured data.
The essential functions of a
Building Survey Technician revolve around applying three key skill areas to overcome site-specific challenges and capture all the information required by a project's scope:
1. Problem-solving Skills: Quickly assessing and resolving unexpected issues in office, adapting measurement strategies to unconventional building features, and ensuring the safety and efficiency of the data collection process.
2. Technology Proficiency: Expertly utilizing advanced measuring instruments (e.g., laser distance meters, 3D scanners, specialized cameras) and AutoCAD to produce highly accurate, geospatially relevant data.
3. People Skills (Diplomacy and Communication): Interacting professionally and diplomatically with clients, site managers, building occupants,
and other stakeholders, managing site access, and clearly communicating data requirements or site constraints.
Hard Skills (Technical and Cognitive Competencies)
- Orienteering and Spatial Awareness: The ability to navigate complex, multi-level structures, maintain a constant sense of direction and position within the site, and efficiently plan measurement routes to minimize redundancy.
- Mathematical Reasoning: Rapid and accurate application of geometry, trigonometry, and basic algebra for on-the-spot verification of measurements, calculation of inaccessible distances, and triangulation.
- Spatial Visualization: The mental capacity to translate a complex, three-dimensional physical space into a two-dimensional plan view and vice versa, anticipating how measured points will connect to form the final deliverable.
- Basic AutoCAD/CAD Software Fluency: Fundamental ability to efficiently input spatial data into 2D plans.
- Fundamentals of Building Systems:
- Structural Systems: Basic knowledge of column grids, load-bearing walls, beams, joists, and common structural materials.
- Electrical Systems: Understanding the locations and significance of main panels, sub-panels, transformers, and common fixture types.
- Mechanical Systems: Recognition of HVAC units, ductwork, plumbing risers, and utility rooms to ensure critical components are correctly located and dimensioned.
Soft Skills (Interpersonal and Exploratory Mindset) The Building Survey Technicians operates with an Explorer Mindset
—a necessary trait for entering and efficiently mapping unknown environments.
- Tenacious: Possessing the drive to see a data collection task through to completion,
overcoming site access issues, inclement weather, or technical difficulties without compromising accuracy.
- Curious: A relentless desire to find all the information, asking the necessary questions, and proactively seeking out obscured or hidden features that may be critical to the client's scope.
- Innovative: The ability to think creatively to measure points that are physically or visually inaccessible, employing indirect measurement techniques or adapting equipment setups.
- Problem-solver: A proactive approach to identifying and resolving logistical, technical, or physical barriers during the measurement process.
- Diplomatic: Maintaining composure and professionalism when dealing with potentially disruptive or uncooperative individuals on-site, ensuring smooth operations and representing ABMS positively.
- Communicative: Clear, concise, and timely internal communication with the Project Manager and office team, particularly regarding site hazards, scope creep, or necessary field clarifications.
- Attention to detail: Meticulous recording of measurements, annotations, and photo documentation, recognizing that small omissions or errors in the field can necessitate costly and time-consuming rework.
