*Eligibility based on employment status Detailed Overview In accordance with the College of Health and Care Professionals of British Columbia standards of practice, Fraser Health mission, values and occupational therapy acute care standard, and working collaboratively and in partnership with the Manager, clinical leaders, stakeholders and the interprofessional care team in the provision of patient and family centered care, the Clinical Practice Leader is responsible for leading and coordinating occupational therapy services for the assigned site. Supervises and provides clinical practice leadership to occupational therapists and designated staff, coordinates work assignments, oversees quality and safety activities, evaluates performance, determines training/orientation needs, recruits staff, oversees budget for the service, and participates in budget and service planning. Contributes to the development of the occupational therapy profession through approved practice council site/regional committee participation.

Carries a clinical caseload as required.

Responsibilities

1. Coordinates the occupational therapy service for the site; monitors, evaluates and coordinates the effective distribution of resources ensuring the delivery of quality patient and family centered care.
2. Provides clinical practice leadership by providing guidance, support, technical advice and acting as a clinical resource to staff; formulates objectives, standards, processes and procedures in consultation with program and allied health leaders and relevant interprofessional team members. Identifies and prioritizes practice issues and education needs; develops, implements and evaluates orientation and educational programs for staff; organizes in-service education programs.
3. Ensures clinical practice, regulatory, accreditation, and Fraser Health occupational therapy acute care standards are met, communicated, understood, and monitored. Develops implements and evaluates clinical practice reference manuals, policies and procedures.
4. Supervises designated staff by coordinating work assignments and schedules, ensuring appropriate coverage, adjusting schedules according to workload and service needs and facilitating resolutions to work issues. Receives and responds to vacation and leaves of absence requests and processes payroll as required.



Receives requests for education and reviews and approves in consultation with the Manager. Identifies staffing needs; interviews and selects staff, or provides clinical input into the hiring of new staff, assessing clinical skill and competence.
5. Writes, conducts and signs performance appraisals. Supports staff in their professional development and learning needs. Reviews individual clinical practice and/or other performance concerns with staff when required and refers issues requiring disciplinary action to the Manager.
6. Develops, implements and monitors quality and safety activities; evaluates changes in patient and family centered practice and takes corrective action as appropriate. Maintains awareness of new approaches and recommends evidence-based changes to policies, procedures, and the Fraser Health occupational therapy acute care standard that could benefit patient care and service delivery.
7. Prepares operating and capital budgets; monitors expenditures, reports and justifies variances, provides recommendations for improvements, determines, prioritizes and provides input to the Manager regarding capital equipment needs.
8. Collaborates with occupational therapy clinical practice leaders across Fraser Health, other peers, and colleagues from other health authorities in order to strive for practice standardization and to support the network of rehabilitation. Develops and fosters effective relationships with clinical leaders, stakeholders and the interprofessional care team.
9. Participates in service planning by providing input into service goals and objectives, providing input into space and equipment needs, and recommending ways to improve utilization of resources.
10. Develops processes for routine and formalized maintenance of equipment. Monitors inventory of equipment and supplies. Ensures operating condition of existing equipment is maintained by monitoring its operation and arranging for maintenance and repairs as required.
11. Develops and maintains workload measurement statistics and other reports as required such as activity levels and attendance.
12. Applies an evidence-based approach to problem solving and supports the research culture through promoting staff awareness and involvement in research activities, reviewing relevant literature/resources, identifying issues/practices which require research, and promoting use of research findings in clinical practice.
13. Participates in approved occupational therapy and interprofessional research, special projects, and committees including practice councils and clinical decision support tool development.
14. Participates in or leads the investigation of complaints by patients/families; follows up on complaints and implements corrective action as appropriate and according to established protocols.
15. Oversees the clinical supervision and evaluation of students; coordinates student placement and practicum learning activities.
16. Assumes a clinical caseload as required; assesses, plans,



implements and evaluates treatment of assigned patients.
17. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience

Current full registration with the College of Health and Care Professionals of British Columbia. Five (5) years recent and relevant occupational therapy experience including one (1) year of supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Skills and Abilities

- Comprehensive knowledge of occupational theory and practice within a patient and family centered model of care.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the College of Health and Care Professionals of British Columbia standards of practice and practice guidelines for clinical practitioners.
- Knowledge of occupational therapy standardized tests, measures, use of equipment and related techniques.
- Knowledge of other health care professions and their role in patient care.
- Ability to collaborate with clinical leaders to develop common goals and values.
- Ability to guide others through change and resolution of conflict effectively.
- Ability to lead, supervise, provide work direction and guidance to others, and provide effective performance evaluation and development.
- Ability to allocate staff assignments to meet program requirements using available resources.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing and encourage open exchange of information and ideas.
- Ability to teach, coach and coordinate the education and orientation of staff and students.
- Ability to organize, document, coordinate and communicate clinical practice policy and procedures.
- Ability to prioritize, problem solve, coordinate workflow and carry a clinical caseload as required.
- Ability to coordinate, monitor and maintain operating and capital budgets.
- Ability to support evidence-based research including identifying research questions and promoting research opportunities.
- Ability to operate related equipment including relevant software applications.
- Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
