Who Is Caregivers Alberta?

Caregivers Alberta provides resources, support, and education to help unpaid caregivers provide care to family members or friends.

Our services are wide-ranging to meet the diverse needs of caregivers—from our caregiver support line and one-on-one coaching to peer support groups and our award-winning education program, COMPASS for the Caregiver.

We serve caregivers, employers, and healthcare professionals across Alberta. We continually expand and adapt our programs and support services in response to the evolving needs of caregivers.

At the heart of our work is helping caregivers access the tools, resources, and connections they need to feel more confident and resilient while creating a more sustainable caregiving journey.

Position Scope & Summary

Reporting to the Manager, Volunteer Resources and Community Development, the Community Development Specialist is responsible for building and nurturing relationships with relevant stakeholders across Alberta communities.

A particular focus of this role will be the development and sustainability of in-person peer support groups and the planning and execution of regional gatherings.

Stakeholders may include caregivers, FCSS offices, libraries, healthcare professionals, Caregivers Alberta Ambassadors, other volunteers, and community partners necessary to fulfill the role.

To be successful, the incumbent will combine strategic thinking, partnership development, consultation, and community engagement. You will work alongside local stakeholders to identify issues impacting caregivers and support Caregivers Alberta in developing responsive solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Community Engagement — 65%

- Build and maintain relationships with relevant individuals, groups, and agencies to develop supports that respond to the needs of caregivers.
- Extend the reach of Caregivers Alberta’s programs and services through outreach and engagement with public, private, community, and voluntary sector organizations.
- Collaborate with external partners to identify local issues, needs, and demands.
- Attend regional inter-agency meetings as required to represent Caregivers Alberta.
- Deliver education programs both in person and online to increase awareness of Caregivers Alberta’s programs and services across the province.
- Attend regional community events, conferences, and other tabling and speaking opportunities to promote Caregivers Alberta’s programs and services and distribute printed materials.




- Under the direction of the Manager, Volunteer Resources and Community Development, and/or program contractors, support the planning and execution of events such as regional gatherings and town halls that create opportunities for caregivers and community members to connect and learn.
- Strengthen connections and integration between Caregivers Alberta and healthcare professionals.
- Promote Caregivers Alberta’s Resource Roadmap directory and help identify relevant services and programs that could be added to the directory.

Peer Support & Program Delivery — 25%

- Help establish local peer support programs and other caregiver connection initiatives with identified partners and/or Peer Support and Ambassador volunteers.
- Support the initial delivery of peer support programming as needed.
- With support from Communications, oversee promotional campaigns that generate awareness of peer support and other initiatives within communities.
- Provide ongoing support and relationship management to peer support partners and facilitators.
- Assist with coordinating attendance at facilitator training and attend peer support community of practice meetings when necessary and able.
- Assist with reviewing and updating peer support policies, procedures, and best practices.

Volunteer Engagement — 10%

- Support the recruitment and onboarding of regional Peer Support and Ambassador volunteers.
- Help maintain and update volunteer databases, policies, procedures, and reporting related to volunteer activities and hours.
- Attend monthly Ambassador meetings online when necessary and able.

- Communicate effectively with excellent written and verbal English skills.
- Practice discretion and maintain confidentiality when working with employees, volunteers, and anyone accessing Caregivers Alberta programs and services.
- Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and a strong commitment to providing quality service in a nonprofit, multicultural environment.

Qualifications & Experience

- Post-secondary education in human or social services, program development and coordination, volunteer administration, or a related field, combined with experience focused on relationship building and demonstrating empathy and compassion.
- Experience working in a nonprofit environment.
- Ability to establish appropriate boundaries with clients, navigate difficult situations, and respond in a composed and professional manner.
- Familiarity with the nuances, challenges, and lived experiences of caregivers.
- Proficiency with online video and meeting platforms such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, including SharePoint, Outlook, Word, and Excel.
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the duties of the position will be considered. Candidates with substantial relevant experience but without post-secondary education will also be considered.

Work Requirements

- This is a 0.5 FTE position, with hours generally worked Monday to Friday during regular business hours. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required.
- The position involves moderate travel. A valid driver’s licence and reliable vehicle are required.
- The ability to work from home is required. Computer equipment will be provided.

- This posting is for two positions: one serving northern Alberta and one serving southern Alberta.
- Preferred candidates will be located in either the Grande Prairie region or the Lethbridge region.
