Job Title: Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) – Correctional Health
Location: Nanaimo, BC
Contract Duration: Sep 7th, 2026 – Jan 31, 2027, with potential for extension.
Schedule: 8-hour or 10-hour shifts | No night shifts .
Additional Rate: Available for approved educational courses/certifications.
Job Summary
- Provide nursing care to inmates with acute and chronic medical conditions
- Conduct comprehensive physical and mental health assessments
- Administer medications, including psychiatric and controlled substances, safely and accurately
- Monitor and manage withdrawal, detox, and substance use–related conditions
- Support inmates with mental health disorders using therapeutic communication and de-escalation techniques
- Respond to medical emergencies and mental health crises within a secure environment
- Collaborate with physicians, RNs, mental health teams, and correctional staff
Qualifications
- Current registration as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) with BCCNM
- Minimum 1 year of recent experience in strong acute care and mental health skills
- Occupational First Aid Level OFA (OFA II) – Preferred
- Current CPR/BLS certification – Required
- Current immunization schedule
Skills & Abilities
- Strong clinical assessment, communication, and critical thinking skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team
- Knowledge of mental health, addictions, communicable diseases, and primary care
- Basic computer proficiency
